Hey now, so I bought a normal old Xbox about a week ago (finally) and the main thing I really want to do with it, is put some older games (emulators?) on it. Should I just softmod, or should I buy an actual chip and deal with that?
At first, I was going to just try and softmod it, but I don't know exactly what to download in order to make it work. I was going to dl AIDv3, and SID4.5.. I'm sure I need much more than that, which is why I decided to post here, before I royally screw anything up with my Xbox.
Obviously, I don't know much about these subjects.. So feel free to blast me for being uneducated. I just hope some folks can shed some light on this whole modding thing. I've tried reading through previous posts, and they don't seem to be of much help.
Well, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time!

As a fellow softmodder, I would have to say that the softmod is the way to go. There's no real way you can royally screw up if you follow the tutorials that are given with SID 4.5. After you've acquired your sid and aid, then you need to acquire action replay or the mega-x key which usually goes for about 25-30 bucks. You use this to transfer the saves you downloaded from your computer, to memory card, to xbox. You also need either Splinter Cell, Mechassault, or 007 Agent Under Fire. I suggest Splinter Cell because the mechassault and 007 can be "iffy's" because some of them don't work. All you have to do when you get the SID running is make eeprom backup, backup of ms files, and then install softmod. These softmod installers are the safest around and unless you're a major idiot you won't screw up your xbox. Just read the manuals and go for it. After you've basically installed ur softmod using sid, then you can use aid to install ur emulators... I think that you have a royal chance of screwing up your xbox with a modchip if you've never opened it and don't have any soldering experience. Modchips are usually more costly than softmodding..... That's just my input on that.... Modchips although are better than softmods but the advantages aren't that big... If you're trying to just play your emulators, a softmod is the the way to go..... Post here if you need any help and we'll be glad to help you....

also, a good place to get action replay from is ebay, I got mine for 15 bucks from there, instead of 25-30 bucks, plus it is probably hard to find where ever you live at, cause my wal mart and ebgames didnt have any _________________

Thanks for the replies and help, I really appreciate it! I was trying to download AID last night, and the ETA for download time was shifting between 6 and 30hrs.. I don't have a slow computer... Any suggestions on where to download AID and SID..? I noticed that there's an AIDdeluxe link at the top of this page.. I suppose that might be a good place to start.
Oh, one more thing.. So I have the stock 8gb hard drive.. Since I want to softmod it and add emulators, will that be enough memory? I know that emulator games take up almost zero room; and I'm not really interested in backing up my actual Xbox games to my hard drive.
Anyway, thanks again mates, I know I'll be posting again when I actually get all of these programs in order, heh.
Cheers

yeah, but for some odd reason you dont get all of the 8gb, I only saw 4 gb and after install of all emulators and appz, that went down to 3.8gb, so I think 3.8gb is more than enough room for roms etc... _________________

well with any hard drive you never get the full advertised size. i believe that the formattated capacity of the xbox hd is around 7.6gb. the c drive (dashboard files) gets about 500mb, the e drive (gamesaves and cache) gets around 4881mb and the x, y, z (cache) drives get 749.89mb each. although, you can't put anything on the x, y, z drives so that leaves most people with +- 4gb on the e drive depending on how much music/gamesaves they have. since you're softmodded, if you ever want to upgrade to a bigger hd, you should check out the program xboxhdm...they have some good guides at here and at xbox-scene. also, as for acquiring AID, what method are you using to download it? you should check out using bittorrent because if it's configured correctly it can give you some really fast dl speeds. for example, i got the new AID in a little more than an hour.

You could of course become a trial VIP member anf download it from this site for 5 bucks. Doesn't take long at all and you'll get help on the VIP board if you run into problems. That's what I did anyway.

Hi all,
Modchips come into play when you get those infamous ERROR CODES on your xbox and it wont boot.. Thats when most users start hunting our forums for answers.
If you have a softmod and you get the error service screen more then likely you will need to softmod the xbox again to get it working or use pirrups HOTSWAP tutorial. (thanks pirrup.. heheh..)
With a modchip and a copy of Auto Installer Deluxe you will not have a problem again once the modchip is installed and flashed. Its just too easy.
No matter what a user does with a modchip fitted and flashed the AIDeluxe can always boot because the modchip you fitted has a hacked bios..
Thats the main reasons i suggest a modchip over a softmod.. And really it costs just as much to buy the action replay stuff etc etc as a
modchip. But thats up to each individual person..
I have 2 xboxes both modchipped.. And my 360 will be modchipped too i can guanrantee you that.

an Xbox hdd is in fact either 8 or 10 gigs. but it's partitioned in this way.
C:\ 500meg(i think) operating system (not really good to store apps)
E:\ 4.8 gigs (somewhat) this is where you put your stuff if you dont' have F or upgradded hdd.
X,Y,Z:\ are just cache drives of the size of 748mb each, and all files in there will be deleted most of the time, as it's only used for game cache.
AID 3.0 is out, and it should be pretty much final, but you must download via torrent only.
SID 4.5 is so far the best of the SID's to be out there due to it's security sytem, and flexibility, you may use SID 3 and still have a stable softmod, just carefull when you mess with files on C:\.
I can't remember what i was gonna say, but ask and i'll answer if i can. _________________ Xbox v1.1

I thought you might have a go at me for not suggesting softmods.. I like softmods man.. But modchips do make it dam easier.. lol
I hope you all know i dont mean to offend any softmodders but thats just my personal opinion.. Softmodding is more techinical i believe and not that useful for a person who isnt computer orientated..
With nknaves latest release though its all becoming much easier.. With virtual drives to stop users from removing stuff or updating files they shouldnt..
All i can say is it wont be long and im sure ill convert..
I have done atleast 10 or so softmod installs for those of my friends who truely cant afford things.. I like that option but dont like the probs. hah
duox2 (chip) = 18.35 shipped = way to go for beginners
softmods arnt as staple as chips are, and it comes out to about the same price...
like hobbs said, if you have a chip, you dont need to worry about deleting things becuase you can always boot AID and repair it.
