My 2001/2002 model xbox's hdd has finally died. I have a spare 20gb disk to go into it.
What do i need to do, to get the new 20gb hdd working again. Do i need to buy a chip or can i softmod it using the tools (how hard is it extract the bios) from a dead hdd.
any advice would be appreciated.
thankyou james

first of all, you must tell us the symptoms of your xbox, not just......it died, cause that doesn't tell us what's with it.
to get that 20 gig working, well, once again we need to know what's wrong with the xbox so we come up with solution of getting a chip, or still be able to do without it.
bios is not on the hdd, it's on the tsop or xyclone chip of the motherboard.
Please give more info, as this is not enough for us to give you a straight answer. _________________ Xbox v1.1

ok Sorry about that. it was kinda rushed at work.
The hdd has died, clunking noises apon inital power up but the unit still functions. (i get flashing a orange/green flashing light on the front)
apart from that the unit itself works fine.
Is it possible to prepare the good 20gb segate to replace the current drive and run a new dashboard.
again thankyou for your time

You can install a new hdd into your box. You will need to back up the eeprom from it somehow and save it to your pc. Once that's done you would use xboxhdm to lock the new hdd.
If you can't retrieve the eeprom, then you will have to chip your box. The Xenium Ice is a nice chip. Fairly inexpensive and the complete solderless install takes less than 30 minutes. _________________ Xenium Ice 2.3.1 OS

We've never been told if anything appears on the monitor to show an error code, my bet is no.
Orange-green means no AV pack.
It will make your hard drive clunk.
I've tested it by pulling out the AV plug and turning on the Xbox.
Check to see if the pack is connected. Push on the connectors at the back of the Xbox where your video goes in and also check the connections on the monitor/TV. If so then replace the pack with another. If this still doesn’t fix the problem, it may be possible the traces from the A/V connector to the IC are cut or damaged. _________________ http://twitter.com/HQ_Shark2th
