Post subject: Playing DVD's in a Softmodded Xbox w/ remote

I have been using XBMC (Build Aug. 4th 2005) for a couple of days now. Today I just realized that I cannot just stick a DVD in my drive and have it auto-play. The drive spins for a little bit, the DVD drive can see the title of my DVD, but nothing else happens. Tried clicking Play DVD under the My Videos section, but no luck there either. I can play DVD's through the program DVD x2-DongleFree DVD, but not with the remote.

What would be the best and easiest ways to play DVD's? I really liked how it worked in my unmodded xbox where I could just put the disc in and everything would be fine. Would a newer build of XBMC address this problem?

Thanks!

P.S. Here is some of the necessary info about my box
Softmodded via 007 exploit using SID
Installed XBMC from AID v. 2.11
The kernal version of my xbox is 1.0.5838.1
I don't have MS DASH 5960 installed.

This has always been a mystery to me. I have a samsung drive so I can't really watch dvd movies. You could always try updating XBMC maybe that'll help. Since its working with the dongle-free, i suggest just using that because it is a good program. I know that probably didn't help but i was making a suggestion.

what i do is set the default dvd player in xbmc to the ms-dash

so when i put a dvd in xbmc it starts ms-dash and i have full control with my remote .

if you don't have remote i would suggest to use dongle free dvd-x

Does the version of XBMC on Nknave's XED have the recently added DVD support? If so, you might want to try that.

I installed DVD x2-DongleFree as a program using AID 2.11. When I want to watch a DVD movie I just load DVD x2-DongleFree through XBMC's Programs menu.

This has worked well for me so far.

Downloaded and installed a new '06 build and it fixed my DVD problem. Everything worked flawlessy for the 5 minutes I was testing it out. But now I have a new problem. I tried upgrading XBMC and it is my main dash, but the menu is weird. Screenshots to get a better idea->

http://www.myfilehut.com/userfiles/285/screenshot000.bmp
http://www.myfilehut.com/userfiles/285/screenshot001.bmp

The first screenshot is what i see directly after booting up. The second is what I get to appear after fiddling with some buttons.

So I solved my first problem, I just need help getting this thing running as my main dash from scratch. I followed the instructions from the online manual wiki -> http://manual.xboxmediacenter.de/wakka.php?wakka=InstallXBMC&v=s6w but it doesn't seem to help. Does anyone have a step by step n00b tutorial of getting XBMC as my main dash through using UnleashX or EvoX? Thanks.

I like pirrup's idea about use'n the ms dash with the remote. Makes pirrfect sense to me. Wink

The problem with your menu might be a skin issue. From what I've read, the newer builds of XBMC dont work to well with some of the older skins. Try switching to the default skin and see if that helps. Also when I upgrade my XBMC, I delete the whole folder and replace it with the new one via FTP.....heard somewhere that helps avoid conflicts.

Problem solved.

For anyone who is suffering the same problem i will fill you in.

The problem was I didn't update the .xbe file that launches XBMC as a dashboard. In other words, I was launching build 01-10-06 build with an 08-04-05 XBE. That is what causes the problem. In order to replace the XBE, i renamed default.xbe that came with the latest build to evox.xbe. My xbox looks for the evox.xbe when booting so i tricked it a little. Anyways that is how i solved it for those wondering.

This latest build has a great DVD playback feature. Everything is working perfectly now.
