Im still trying to work through an issue with two xboxes, both have a thompson drive but only one reads discs well. Both dvd-roms are clean and run well, but one gets a dirty disc error and one doesnt.

Anyone know if you can update the firware in this machine to get it running the same as the newer xbox?

I don't think it's a firmware issue thats causing the dirty disk errors, it's more than likely an alignment problem with the laser itself. Adjusting it can be difficult, b/c the adjustments have to be very precise.

if your handy with a ohm meter them you can do a pot tweak on the thomson fairly simply...this allows you to adjust the laser beam...but i do warn you can damage the drive all together if you dont know what your doin...no there is no firmware upgrades i have come acrossed and i have searched for many....
