I have softmodded many xboxes without any problems using the tools on this site so i am not a total noob,but i want to put a bigger h/d in my xbox.I have read a lot of tutorials but just thought i would ask the experts before i did the deed. here is what i plan to do
1) reformat my stock h/d ( C+E ) using the latest retail dash
2) re install soft mod +evox
3) back up eeprom file
4) copy C,E and eeprom files to respective xboxhdm folder on pc
5) build iso using xboxhdm and above files + burn cd
??? do i need to unlock stock h/d ?????? please advise if so at which step
6) disconnect all h/d on pc and connect new large h/d alter pc bios to boot from cd
7) boot pc with xboxhdm cd in drive
format and build bigger drive to xbox file system with files from stock drive and eeprom
9) disconnect from pc and put into xbox
10) boot xbox
will this work if not please advise why

No you dont need to unlock your original harddrive.
Just get the C+E+EEPROM off there like you noted and put them in there respected directories in xboxhdm directory. You might also want to go ahead a copy your exploited save too before you create your ISO. Just throw it in the E directory(UDATA+TDATA) with the rest of your saves.
You will want to lock your new harddrive via option 3 in xboxhdm (lockhd -a) or else you will get a error when you put your new harddrive in your xbox.
