Hello, I'm new to x-boxes and a complete moron when it comes to computers etc. so please go easy on me!
I just got given an x-box that my brother picked up in Malaysia sometime last year and need some advice. It has certainly had some kind of modification but I don't know what. I have some rather dodgy looking games with it and have been told to reboot the machine after loading them to get them to play. When I do this evo X comes up in red in the top left corner of the screen and then the games will work fine. Can someone tell me what this means? Is my machine chipped or has something else been done to it?
Now I've been told I should load a new dashboard but this is where I need help. I was told the easiest thing was to use Autoinstaller but after viewing the manuals on the website it talks about preparing you're x-box first and talk of different chips etc Now I don't know what kind of chip (if any) is in the machine and of course don't want to screw it up completely.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Even if it is f**k off you're too stupid to be getting involved in this!!

Oh man, you've been to other sites that flame noobs huh? Relax, we don't bite (much huh Enigma?) so questions are good, homework is good, jumping in without knowing what's going on first, bad.
The Evox tells me that the bios (the thing that tells the Xbox how to handle itself) is different from the one that was installed on the box when sold as retail, therefore, you are correct that your box is modded.
Interesting that you have to "reboot" it.
Is it chipped? Honestly, no one knows unless the box is opened and checked to see if there is a chip in the box. Impossible to tell for the most part. When you boot up without a game, does the box simply go to the normal Xbox menu or does something else (another dash) come up?
With a few questions and answers, I think we might be able to determine what you've got there.
So f**k off you're too stupid to be getting involved in this!! JOKING!! _________________ http://twitter.com/HQ_Shark2th

My guess is that your box is chipped. A softmod will not show the EvoX badge during boot up. But Like Shark2th says, the only way to find out for sure is to crack that box open.
You should d/l AutoInstaller Deluxe. It's a good tool to have. You can update the dash without having to worry about what kind of chip...or mod for that matter...you have. _________________ Xenium Ice 2.3.1 OS

Just run XBMC and press the right-joystick. Select INFO and it should tell you what BIOS and chip you are running.

When I start it with no disc I just get the standard x-box menu. I should be looking to install a new dashboard right? If I download this Autoinstaller thing is that going to do the job and most importantly is there danger of me wrecking the thing completely?
It's a long story but basically I visited my brother in Singapore and he bought me a new x-box for christmas but there was a problem with it so my 11 year old nephew very kindly gave me his own one to bring back to the UK. He now calls me on a regular basis to see how I'm getting on with it and I would feel terrible telling him I'd wrecked it after a week so I want to be sure I'm doing the right thing before going ahead with anything!
It was reading this that worried me as I don't know what is in my x-box and even if I did I don't fully understand what it all means:

BigTommy, honestly it's a walk in the park. Go snag the auto installer, let us know what dash you want (I personally like the XBMC dash) and we'll walk you through it. _________________ http://twitter.com/HQ_Shark2th

Thanks again for your patience! I've downloaded Autoinstaller and successfully burnt it to dvd. I don't know which dasboard to install (any advice appreciated) but when I do decide, which drive do I put it in? Once I choose and install it can I change it for a different one or the original one if I want and if so how? My xbox has the standard hard drive in it incase you need to know.
I'm sure these are stupid questions but I'd rather be safe than sorry!
If anyone can throw any light on my Warriors question in my other thread I would very much appreciate that too!

I'm in a similar situation. I managed to softmod my XBox and have a few Dashboards installed including AnOd-X, Avalaunch, EvolutionX-3921, EvolutionX3935, MediaXMenu and UnleashX Xbox Launcher. A friend sent me a Cd that has Auto Installer Deluxe on it and I installed a bunch of Emus as well as a load of skins. Its really cool but I have no idea how to get xSnes9X Roms from my PC to the XBox. I am hoping it will be as simple as burning them to a CD then from there to the XBox but not sure how to do this or even if it is possible.
Anyway any advice you can offer to a complete noob is greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Vega...

On my big HDD's, i'll just keep the roms on them, thru FTP like Gus738 said. It is possible to put them on a disk, though. Create an iso with the roms in it, and burn it. You could even put the emulator engine on the disk, just make sure the xbe file is named default.xbe, and its in the root dir, and it should boot, and your roms should be right there too. _________________
