Hello I have never posted @ xbox-hq before but have been lurking for a while. I have just ran into a problem that I am desperately looking for help with. Ok I just recentely acquired this v1.4-1.5 xbox from a friend....It keeps freezing/locking up at random ...It will lock up in just the dashboard. So my first thoughts were HDD or DVD-DRIVE so I swapped out both with same results. So I then did simple things such as clearing out cache and checking cable/wire connections. The freezing still occurs , does anyone have any suggestions or comments on what may be causing this xbox to lock up like this. I am thinking I will have to buy a new motherboard.

Any help is greatly appriciated!!

If you experience the same problem after using a different dvd drive and hdd, most likely it would be your mobo starting to fail.

Yup, Unfortunately sounds like it.. You have gone through basically the same procedure any of us would have to test and it still froze so id say the mainboard is on the way out..

Ahhhh no its doing it all over again. Its gotta be the mobo going out the door.....It ran much longer after applying the thermal compound. I guess my only choice now would be to buy a new mobo?

Since you replaced the HDD, I'm assuming this is a chipped box? Just curious, but is it solderless or not? Sometimes the D0 point (solder or solderless, both) will work loose and cause problems when running modded. If you can disable your chip, does it still lock up? If not, then I would try to reseat your solderless connector, or resolder your D0 point and reseat your chip on the LPC header...

Also, most dash boards allow you to set the fan faster than the quiet 1.0x (20%) setting. If you think the heat sink may have helped (and you are running your box in a pretty hot place) you may just try cranking the fan setting up to 3x (60%) and see if it helps. If it does, at least you know one more factor of what is causing your problems and try to find ways to help it.
