Has anyone else noticed that our presidential hopefuls are paying a hell of a lot more attention to business and information technology. I would love to go into this hard-core or post an off-topic news article, but I'll spare most people the fine details.
If you are wondering why Bush and Kerry care so much to put IT in the mainstream topics, maybe this will explain a little.
According to a recent poll held by InformationWeek.com three quarter of the respondents say they're somewhat or highly famiilar iwth the Democrats' IT platform and 80% said the same about the Republicans'.
Here is a brief summary of where both Bush and Kerry stand.
Bush's Platform:
>>Offshore Labor
Would leave businesses free to locate work whereever they choose. Warns against retreating into "economic isolationsism".
>>Broadband Access
Has called for universal broadband access within three years. Would make moratorium on Internet-access tax permanent and has encouraged elimination of regulatory impediments.
>>E-Medical Records
Wants "most" Americans to have electronic medical records within 10 years. Has appointed national health IT coordinator to make this happen.
>>Internet Taxation
Has called for a permanent moratorium on Internet access taxes.
>>R&D Tax Credit
Wants tax credit, which expired last month, made permanent.
>>Capital Gains Tax
Proposed eliminating double taxation of dividends; comprised with Congress on 15% tax for dividends and capital gains.
Kerry's Platform
>>Offshore Labor
Plans to eliminate tax advantages for companies moving jobs overseas. Otherwise, would not interfere with business decisions to offshore work.
>>Broadband Access
Would provide tax credits to companies that extend broadband availability to rural and other underserved areas and invest in faster networks in underserved and residential areas.
>>E-Medical Records
Expects "ever" American to have an electronic medical record within four years. Unclear how he plans to make this happen.
>>Internet Taxation
Supports four-year extension of moratorium on Internet-access taxes.
>>R&D Tax Credit
Would exend the 20% Tax Credit provided for R&D spending
>>Capital Gains Tax
Wants to eliminate tax on capital gains from investments in small businesses tha are held for at least five years.
Now of course this is just a drop in the bucked in regard to where both stand. I just thought these comparisons were deserving attention first.
