I recently changed the 120 GB HD in my xbox for a 250 GB drive without any probs. Now I would like to use that 120 GB drive as an external drive on my computer...Does it just need to be reformatted, because my computer...while recognizing that it is present (and "working properly"), does not provide an icon to access it. Hope you guys can help out!

If you want to use it in Windows, you should be able to format it. Easiest way is to right click on my computer, click the "manage" option, and click on "disk management" under "storage". This will give you a good graphical indication of all your partitions, the status of them and allow you to partition and format them.

Well...this just gets more strange.... I have the drive in an external enclosure via a USB 2. The drive is plugged in...recognized to be present by windows. The device manager says it is working properly. Disk management does not even list it as a drive. It does show my 2 internal drives working properly. The drive is set as a master in an external enclosure...any one have any clue? (I appreciate the help..BTW)

You should see it as a use mass storage device. Since you have it hooked up via usb it will not show up as a hdd.

Correct, any type of drive that is external be it a HDD or a usb flash stick will always be labled as Mass storage.

I appreciate all the input. I have D/L a setup manager from western digital and run that. Now that says the drive is formatted and ready to use. Device manager says the device is working properly. No icon to access it anywhere...MSD or HDD. Where do you think I would find it? Anyone know what to do next? (PS This may not be the proper venue for these questions so I appreciate the help)

Click on the my computer icon on your desktop, then scroll doen to where it says either storage or device with removable storage. You should see all your Hdd's whether they are internal or external. Just remember that the external HDD will say mass storage device.

BTW, I moved this to the Off Topic Discussions.

Thanks for the reply...had to go searching for it (disregard that latest post looking for it, BTW). Yeah..you would think that your idea would work and believe me this in not the first time i have installed a device (USB or otherwise). What I am saying is that for some reason there is no icon displayed that allwos me to access this device. I have disables and re-initialized the damn thing too and still have no way to acess it. I wen through MS help and it says that I can only have 4 SATA/EIDE devices on my computer, but the last time i checked...USB is not counted as a IDE. I am confused as to why I can see the device on the device manager, when i initialize it, it is recognized but I have no access to it whatsoever. I have it set as a master if that means anything...Here is the kicker, the enclosure I have it in is swappable and the computer WILL recognize the 80 Gb drive that I swap with....What the heck!?
