Post subject: Copying Big Ass Emulator Disk to the hard drive
Reply with quote

I found a torrent for something called the Big Ass Emulator Disk that had like 4 gigs of emulators and roms so I thought I'd download it and see how it ran. I have plenty of hard drive space, so I extracted the .iso and tried to FTP all of the files to the X-Box but a lot of them failed.

At the time, I didn't know why they wouldn't upload, so I burned the .iso to a DVD-R and tried to run it that way. A menu would pop up with a list of the systems I could emulate but every time I tried to select one the program would exit to the Dashboard.

Frustrated, I tried to rip the files off of the DVD using PX-HDD but it complained about long filenames. Now I knew why the X-Box didn't like a bunch of the ROM files -- because the X-Box filesystem doesn't allow filenames longer than 42 (I think) characters. That's helpful but it still left me wondering why someone would make a disk for the X-Box that doesn't run on the X-Box. I dug around a bit more and found that there are a few retail games that have file names longer than 42 characters and they run from the DVD without problems. So why is the BAED quitting to the Dashboard after I select a system when I run it from the DVD?

I was still determined to rip the disk to the hard drive, so I looked for another program to do it. That's when I heard about dvd2xbox. Apparently it can work around too-long filenames, so I loaded it up and started to rip the DVD again. Everything was going fine for a little while but it was clear that this would be a long operation so I decided to watch some TV in the meantime. After about 10 minutes I noticed the hard drive wasn't making noise anymore. I switched back to the X-Box and found that dvd2xbox had stalled. I rebooted and tried again and it stalled again but on a different file this time.

So now I don't know what to do. Getting this thing to run has become a quest of mine. It's personal now.

Has anyone else here heard of the Big Ass Emulator Disk? Has anyone had any success putting it on the hard drive? Why can't I run it from the DVD? Is it just some massive tease or is my X-Box fucked up somehow?

Sorry about the extensive back-story. This whole process has made me a little crazy in the head I guess. Please help! Very Happy

Whenever screwy sh*t happens to my Xbox, I start to wonder.... Could this be a dashboard or BIOS problem? For example, I bought a Steel Battalion controller on ebay. The damn game would jump to the main game menu whenever I pushed the "ignition" button... obviously a screwed-up controller... nope! I changed BIOS and it worked fine. Another example... many of my games on the HDD quit working... when the game was selected, I'd be taken back to the main Evox menu (this happened on MULTIPLE hard drives). I thought.... hmmm, must be a BIOS issue... nope! Reinstalled the same exact dashboard on only one of the affected hard drives... all the games on all the hard drives started working again... I still have no clue why this happened!

While I don't know all the ins and outs of the stetup, I know that the DVD system can deal with longer filenames than the HDD system.

Without having a copy of the program it would be hard for me to determine what to do with it.

My guess is you can use Avalaunch to copy from. You can always try extracting the ISO burning to another disk and then letting avalaunch copy it to your xbox HD.

If that doesn't work I would be suspect about the program. It may just be a poorly put together product that is buggy. Or, it could be corrupt and the corrupt version is passed on from person to person, a downfall of filesharing.

keep me posted, if you have the resources and don't mind getting me a copy of it I'll see what I can do with it.

You can email me at sales@themodgod.com if interested.

Hi,

I just d/l the Big Ass Emu disc and found this in the .nfo file (by the person who compiled the disc)

Q: Can I extract the ISO and put the contents on my Xbox hard drive?

A: Short answer, no. Long answer, yes, with a "but." The Xbox can read 128-character filenames from a disc, but filenames on the hard drive are limited to 30-something characters. When you try to transfer the contents of the ISO to the Xbox, you'll get errors on all the filenames longer than that limit. All the shorter ones should transfer fine, though, and so should all the files neccessary for the operation of all the emulators. If you want to play ALL the games off the HDD, you'll have to get a batch renamer program (there are lots of freeware ones) to truncate the filenames.

Dunno if it helps.

I have downloaded and used the BAED and it should work fine right from the dvdr if downloaded and burned correctly. I have NOT worked on the long filename problem yet for ripping to the drive but it boots to the dvd and ALL emu's and roms work fine.
Controller MUST be in PORT 1 for it to work.

I used DVD 2 Xbox to copy the BAED's to my hard drive, then simply copied the important files over to the Emulator folder. Worked like a dream. Dvd2xbox renamed all the files for me.

Hope that helps.
