As far as my case goes it is stock, i have 2 lights, which i believe are cathodes, from scanners complete with their inverter/controllers. I want to know what i should do with them, i was thinking about making a window or something in the top of the case, but i am just a n00b at case work and want to know if it is at all feasable for me....also painting the case, how tough is that? thanks! Surprised

hi format13,

Some nice questinos you have there.. Im not that much of a case modder myself (only because of time issues) but there are plenty of guys on here to help.. TheMod GOd for one is really good at tweaking a case..

TheModGod is unfortunately away on holiday so you may have to wait a few days for a reply to this one unless another case modding members comes along.. We do have a few but not everyone visits daily like MG and myself..

anyway, your topic is now bumped back to the top of active topics.
I hope you get a reply soon.

have you ever done computer case modding? Have you ever installed an optical drive or hard drive in a computer?

I am asking these questions because then you would probably know the standard that the cathodes in question power cable are.

Are they 4 pin? 1 red 1 yellow and 2 black wires? This is a molex cable, and is found in xboxs and computers. If so then you should have no problem buying a "power cable splitter" (cant think of tech name right now...!) and then they should work perfectly. Install the Y adapter (i think thats it) into the molex plug that is used by the hard drive, then plug one end into the cathode and the other into the hard drive. For the other cathode, you could probably hook up another y adapter and do the same for the optical drive.

This is just a suggestion, i will ask my mate what he did tomorrow at school alright? (he has installed two cathodes, so ill ask him what he used)

ok thanks, they were both sauldered to parts of the scanner, they only have a red and a black wire coming from the converter/inverters...so im guessing those are 12v since i could run them from a 9v battery. im sort of afraid of interference they might cause, i heard that if you take off the shielding on the top of the case it causes intereference, i already have to use rf signal since my tv is so old, and i have a computer relatively close (with no case i might add, so much for case modding...). so im hoping there is no interference.

now i am not SURE!!! but i believe yellow wires are 12 v and red is 5v, i am not sure. But seeing as u have red and black wire, make sure the red wire is hooked up to the corresponding red wire on the molex cable. I did this with a fan once, and it worked fine. the black can go in either but i recommend the outer wire, (dunno why, but it worked for me so i will leave it at that).

NOTE: Plugging the red into yellow, probably wont cause any problems, BUT it might. THis is a very miniscule risk, but you never know!

So do what i said previously and if it doesnt work, u could try sticking it in the yellow. PS use sticky tape before soldering anything.

if i were you i would go with the 12v. an xbox is basically an old computer (iatx form factor), if you think of it that way you'll be all set. anything you can think of doing to the case is relatively easy. most of the mods to an xbox need little more then a dremel and a steady hand. you should check the tutorials section of the site (probably the most comprehensive tut section on the net). also if you have any questions just give me a pm. like forahobby said, i dont usually visit the site daily, but i am on every two to three days. hope i was at least a little help.
