Ok, I read a bunch of the stuff on the SOFTMOD (used SID2.0 on a new Action Replay memory card). Now, I'm stuck with an error 13, and I'm not certain what my options are (none of the posts I've read so far are an option).
Here's what I did:
1) Put the save game hack for Mechassault on AR 8MB card (tried Splinter Cell, but AR 8MB card wouldn't hold both NTSC and main file??).
2) Copy MA save game exploit to Xbox HDD using MSDash.
3) Boot MechAssault (original game, not platinum edition), load saved game "Run Linux"
4) Viola, UnleashedX SID 2.0 mini-panel.
5) Backup MS and MOD, then try to install SoftMOD (too bad unleashed doesn't have a backup eeprom option).
6) Get an unrar error pretty early in the sequence and it bombs out (can someone confirm that this DOES flash something new to the eeprom on the box?? I've seen conflicting reports).
7) Repeat it all again (full copy form PC, etc.)...same problem.
8) Delete MS and MOD backup.
9) Delete the SID 2.0 MA save game to try to recopy it all from scratch.
10) Reboot...uh-oh..flashing red light and error 13...
11) Games will load, but now, I don't have a softmod save game on the Xbox HDD anymore and can't get the MSDash to copy it over again (and none of the exploit games will allow a load from memory card).
12) Tried all sorts of newer games booting in the XBox to see if they would reload a new MSDash..no joy. Just to clarify, the SOFTMOD install did NOT complete, so booting even Slayer's ISO doesn't seem to work now. Not sure about AID 2.11 ISO (I'll try downloading, but I think it also needs the EEPROM to be soft modded already...update: AID 2.11 also won't work until you complete the SOFTMOD).
13) Pulled the XBox HDD, booted it in a clean PC (no other HDD's) and a Win98 DOS floppy (doesn't recognize C: or E:). Also tried VMLINUX ISO CD boot and xboxhdm 1.9...can't mount the HDD (I suspect I need to unlock?)
Help...what to try next?
Thanks,
Jhondra

You're first error was prolly because you didn't have a mod to back up before trying to back up. Since you deleted the game saves you'll have to do pirrup's hotswap. You won't have to unlock your hdd, that will only give you more problems. _________________ Xenium Ice 2.3.1 OS

Thanks, Dangermouse. I got xboxhdm1.9 and am burning an iso of it right now (with the C/E from Slayer's Evox iso). I've got some more reading to do, but looks like you are saying I don't need to generate a new "lock" (I have a brand new 250GB Maxtor virgin drive I could put in) key. Anyway, I'm embarrased that I missed that thread from pirrup. Thanks!
Jhondra
P.S. I also just went ahead and bought an Xecutor 2.6 CE chip prior to reading your post for $29 + free S&H at http://www.themodchip.com/usa/home.php so, we'll see how that works.

Well, I got the xboxhdm ISO burnt and booted on a PC, and even tried the "hotswap" HDD option from the xbox to the PC with the DVD cable unplugged to generate an error 12 (supposedly, this should leave the HDD in an unlocked state). Unfortunately, that still says my HDD is "locked" and I don't have any options to unlock it with xboxhd (since I never got even the chance to backup my eeprom.bin file). "xbrowser" doesn't find even a valid xbox partition table on the drive (yes, I have it mounted on primary master). So, without the eeprom.bin anywhere (it should have been backed up to E:/backup originally, but the softmod died before I could see it or copy it anywhere), I'm not sure how to get the drive unlocked...guess this 8GB xbox drive is just a paper weight now? I'll have to see how the chipmod solution works to boot to a new dash on the 250GB drive.

The whole timing thing is the xbox unlocking the hdd. Once you get that, just select to build a hdd from scratch and it will load a retail dash. Then you can redo the softmod process. But remember, it's a timing thing, so it might take a few tries to nail it.
Good luck

Heheh...going backwards, I think. I found an eeprom dump ISO utility, but now my xbox is getting error 16 (clock not set). So, the ISO won't boot. I'll have to see if I can get past that next. Sigh. I'm beginning to think the hardware solution is the best bet. Once there, I'll at least have FTP access, etc.
BTW, what BIOS would you all recommend for the Xecutor 2.6 CE (I don't really care about XBox LIVE! and have widescreen LCD display). I think I have to flash a new bios to that Xecutor 2.6 CE if I want to rip the DVD's to HDD, right?
Thanks,
Jhondra

WOOT!!!
There was ONE key problem with my "hot swap" methodology. I was using my xbox out in another room near an available PC with an IDE cable, but I didn't have a display. Well, if you don't have a display cable plugged into the back of the xbox (even if you don't have it connected to anything), you error out even sooner with a different error it seems and the HDD is NOT unlocked). I figured this out when I saw it was glowing orange without the connector, but testing it on my setup, with the DVD cable unplugged (but video connected) to get the error code 12, it was red (I was trying to get the "timing" down like you suggested, and counting the pulses until the error 12 showed up when I noticed this difference).
Anyway, once got that figured out, and put the display cable in, everything went just fine with the xboxhdm hot swap and I managed to rebuild the C drive with the files I extracted from Slayer's Evox install.
Anyway...COOL!!! Thanks a million for your help. I'm going to do some more work with this as a SOFTMod (still have to see if I can get that working, but it isn't so far...I suspect it is a problem with the AR 8MB memory card), but will probably still do the Executor 2.6 CE mod.
Thanks,
-Jhondra

Well, I finally finished downloading the AID 2.0 files, and I burnt the ISO to a CD-R, but when I boot with that (after applying the Softmod 3.0), I get an error 21. I figured maybe my Thompson DVD couldn't read CD-R, so I burnt it to a DVD+RW (for some reason Nero wouldn't burn the ISO to a DVD...it only wanted CDR or CDRW) with DVD Decrypter. Boot XBox with AID 2.11 Final Iso DVD in, and same error 21. Without the DVD in the drive, it boots to the softmod UnleasedX menu or with a game in the drive, it works fine...
anyone got any ideas?
-Jhondra
P.S. Update: got it all figured out. Had to delete ALL the files off the C:\ and reboot straight into the AID 2.11 Final ISO to get it to work.

Hi guys,
I'm a newb in this xbox softmodding. I did successfully softmod my xbox with SID3 & AID2 (Installed will full application on my E:\). Thinking of frees up some of my space in E:\ I boot up with SID3 to remove some of the files on E:\. SHIT ... I get the error 13. (I did FTP to the box previously to do a full backup of the C: & E I'm wondering is they any easy way to pump back all the files thru FTP.
I can still play original game with the box, but without any game cd in the tray, it will give me error 13. I have search thru the net to find out some work around, but no help. Look's like I'm going to get M$ service as my box is still new and under warranty.
I know there is a way to fix this: PIRRUP HOTSWAP. But my box is still under warranty, I think better ask for help.
Anyone with some solution, please help ...
Thank you very much!

Did you remove ALL of the files on the E:\ drive? Including your save game for the exploit from the SID 3.0? You see, you installed your dash on E:\ which is why you are now getting Error 13 (you deleted it) and probably didn't get the MSDash reinstalled on the C:\ so you are in trouble. IF you still have the save game exploit saved on the HDD, you can just load that game, run the "Run Linux" save game exploit again and resoft mod it...
If you wiped the whole drive without getting an eeprom backup (why did you do that?) then you are SOL, and will have to do the pirrup hot swap method to get your xbox back, or buy a $29 Xecutor 2.6 CE (or other) hardware mod chip (which would then allow you to completely bypass the softmod exploit requirements, and then you could use the xboxhdm 1.9 software to recover your drive).
You did say you backed up your full C:\ and E:\ (lucky bastard...grin...I didn't get the opportunity to even get FTP working)? Did that include getting a backup dump of your EEPROM.bin file as most guides tell you to (should be in E:\backup if you did)?? If it did, you may be in luck, as you won't have to do the hot swap to get the HDD unlocked, you can just copy that file to a floppy disk, put your HDD in a PC (with no other drives attached), burn an ISO of the xboxhdm 1.9 disk and unlock the drive from you eeprom.bin backup, and restore the complete factory xbox drive from xboxhdm 1.9 tools (people have really done a LOT of work for us on all these cool tools...thanks guys!)
As for trying to get Microsoft to warranty the box...uh...good luck. The second they see any indication that you were trying to softmod it, you are probably going to be in trouble (maybe they won't be able to see any signs of it, and you can probably get a swap out from the store you bought it from if it is under 30 days old), but it is claims like yours and wasting Microsoft's time and money on warranty service that isn't THIER products fault, that gives efforts like this a bad name. You intentionally did something that wasn't supported by Microsoft, and now you want them to pay to fix it. Shame on you. Claims like yours are why Microsoft has such a negative view of these sorts of efforts. Fix it yourself with the hot swap...there are tons of people here that would be willing to help you walk through it (myself included).
