hi, i've modded my xbox with the soft mod Splinter Cell exploit. Now I want to upgrade my hard disk. I have an ISO of Slayers EvoX installer although I havent yet been able to get it to boot - i am presuming this is to do with the XBOX being fussy about the medium it is recorded on. I have burnt on CDR but havent yet tried DVDR.
My question(s) is(are):
Is this actually going to work without a mod chip ?
I have heard from some sources it will and for some that it wont.
Has anybody tried this or does anybody know of any other boot discs that will allow me to upgrade the Hard Drive?
Is there anything I need to be really aware of - I have already screwed 1 XBOX up and have had to replace it. I really want to repair the first xbox and upgrade the new one. I am planning on putting a 160GB drive into the XBOX and repairing the original 10GB one.
If anybody has had any experience with a similar softmodded HD upgrade any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Upgrading the Xbox hard drive has never been easy (unless you have a chip). But via softmod, there's many ways to do it. But you're going to need a bit of computer knowledge, and a little bit more time.
First of all, you're going to need some things:

Steps:
1. First take a backup from your retail disk (C,E drive and your eeprom) , you can use evox to backup eeprom.(eeprom backup can be found on E)
2. FTP your backup data to your pc using ftp program.
3. unpack xboxhdm onto your pc
4. put the backup eeprom to the xboxhdmlinuxeeprom folder , put C and E folder into the xboxhdmlinux folder and overwrite the ones already there.
5. In the root of xboxhdm is a file named 'make-iso-win', run this file and wait for it to finish.
6. It will make a .iso file. (burn this file with dvddecryptor)
7. take out all your hard disks in your pc and put the new hard disk (for the xbox) , make sure its primary master and first boot is cdrom.
8. put the disk you made in the cdrom drive and boot your pc .
9. you will get a menu,now choose Option 1 (by typing ‘1’) and press enter to boot VGA console with xbox-drive utilities (default). Type ‘xboxhd’ when it asks you for a login. Another list of options will show up, choose option 1 again (the one that says ‘Build a new Xbox HD from scratch’) and it will begin to format and write the partition table etc. If you put your C: and E: onto the CD then when it asks you about them type yes and when it asks you if you would like an F select yes .
10. reboot your pc (we are almost done )
11. Now for locking the hard drive. This time type ‘3’ and hit enter to boot linux with locking/unlocking utilities. Next, type in ‘lockhd -a’. It will now search for the eeprom on the CD and will automatically lock the hard drive. Now turn off the PC and take out the hard drive when it has finished locking. Put the disk in your softmodded xbox .

one more question if you have the time....
i managed to really screw up one of my xboxs ... now i cant ftp into it and just get the 'your xbox needs a service' screen when it turns on.
the hard drive in this xbox was never unlocked and i didnt back up any of the data on it. i (now) realise the encryption that locks the hard disks is unique to each xbox.
Q: is there ANY way this XBOX can EVER be fixed?

hi again, thanks for all your help - i've been making a little progress with this.
in response to your previous post - the error number in the top left of the screen on the "Your xbox needs service" screen is 16.
anyway...
like i said earlier i have 2 xboxs ... 1 that ive screwed up and 1 that i havent. i would ideally like them both modded and have their hard drives upgraded. let me give you a rundown of the status of both of these now...
1. (this is the one that is buggered): i totally screwed this one up - i turn it on and it says the error number 16 in the top left of the 'your xbox needs service' screen. that about it. its screwed.
2. this xbox isnt screwed. its softmodded using the splinter cell expoit. its got the retail xbox hard disk in it. i would like to upgrade the hard disk in this one with out it ending up like xbox 1.
i downloaded xboxhdm 1.9 and had a look at it. i copied the backed up C&E drives from xbox2 to the folders in the directory and used the .bat file to create an iso which i burnt with nero.
unfortunately, thats where i got a bit stuck - the cd i created doesnt work with my old shit pc. - it just hangs after i choose an option from the begining menu when it gets to a message about 'non volatile memory'. i tested it on a laptop i have (just to see if i could get it to boot further) and it wouldnt get any further. i was thinking i had messed up the cd somehow - but have just tested it in a decent modern pc at work and it seems to work fine except of course i dont think they would like it if i took their pc apart to sort my xbox hard disk out. so i think my mission with this is to find a friend who doesnt mind me unscrewing their pc and putting a harddisk in to try and format it for the xbox.
after all this, i discovered that the CDRW of slayers autoinstaller i made actually boots up in xbox2.
do you think i would be able to use this to configure a large hard drive in my softmodded xbox2?
unfortunately this CDRW doesnt boot up in xbox1. do you think that is because i've screwed it, or because the DVD drive is fussier than xbox 2s?
im just off out now to locate some torx screwdrivers so i can experiment with swapping the DVD drives between machines as I dont want to screw xbox2 and want to combine a new hard disk with the DVD drive that boots the CDRW.
so ..... do you think xbox1 is completely dead?
what steps would you take?

Your first xbox is nowhere near screwd, my friend. Power it on with the eject button, ignore the error. Pop in your exploit game and turn off the system (so the drive closes with tht egame in the tray). Now, turn on the system using the small power button and allow the game to boot. Then, resoftmod as usual (i'm pretty sure your save folder will be fine). Error 16 is in no way a broken box. I promise you.
As for xbox number two. I've used XBHDM on older motherboards, almost 6 or 8 years old. My theory is, if you can browse this site and play flash games online, you should be able to boot the disc.
Your main thing, make sure that the hard drive is set to cable select (with the jumpers). Usually that can bugger up any upgrading you might want to do. So go try and fix your first box, and then try the upgrade.
Just MAKE SURE you put the backups in the right place. And make sure you have an eeprom backup under the Eeprom folder before you make the iso and burn it, or else you won't be able to lock the drive. _________________ "That which does not kill you, only makes you stronger."

the cd i have created with xboxhdm has an empty eeprom folder.
i have no idea what file to put in here.
what file should i be looking for and is the cd useless without the eeprom file?

well i backed up my E drive ... but there is no file on it called 'eeprom' or anything similar so I'm a bit stuck as to where to look.
when i made the xbhdm cd i copied the entire contents of the E drive to the appropriate folder.
you mentioned in one of your posts that the eeprom file is for locking the hard disk - is this essential? i thought this was only neccessary to access the xbox live service which i wont be doing.
will my cd successfully set up a xbox hard drive without this eeprom file?
i have all the neccessary tools now, and am going to attempt to build both the hard disks later on.

Your eeprom backup (as long as you used AID or one of the SID installers to back it up) will be under E:\udata\215"somethinghere"\00000000\backup.
If you used AID or the SID installers to backup your EEPROM there's also an option on the eeprom backup called "Move Backup to..." you can use one of those options to move it to E:\Backup\EEPROM or wherever you want.
Now, all of the files created by your eeprom backup go under your EEPROM folder on xbhdm. Without these, you CANNOT lock the hard drive, and therefore you CANNOT use the upgraded drive on your xbox. _________________ "That which does not kill you, only makes you stronger."

ok its starting to make a bit more sense now...
i've created the cd from the xboxhdm tool and attempted to step up 2 hard disks. as far as i can tell everything worked as it was meant to.
now, when i put either hard disk into the xbox and turn it on it comes up with the 'your xbox needs a service' error screen with an error number of 05 in the top left corner - something to do with the hard disk being 'unlocked' i think - am i correct to think this?
anyway - using slayers auto installer which loads up ok on xbox2 and which is the xbox from which i have a back i managed to find the ConfigMagic tool and have successfully created a backup of the eeprom.bin file. i have downloaded this onto the pc.
so, what i am thinking is that i will use xboxhdm to create a new CD for xbox2 that includes the eeprom.bin stuff in the eeprom directory. hopfeully that would sort out xbox2.
as for xbox1... i dont have a backup of any of it. i havent got the eeprom files either. ive downloaded pirrups ms-c file and checked his tutorial out. i dont really understand what it is on about but am going to prepare the cd including his mc-c files and attempt to prepare the drive using it.
i really havent got a clue what will happen... but my latest question basically is - is it possible to build a hard drive for xbox1 without having any of the original files?

First of all, stop using Slayer's. It's old, outdated, and.... it's old. Seriously, it hasn't had an update since 2004. Go grab AID from aideluxe.com and use it wherever an old tutorial says Slayer's.

Yes, you're right. You didn't use the lock harddrive option (option three from the main menu) of xbhdm. Just create a new XBHDM disc using your eeprom.bin file from the Config magic backup and make sure to lock it.

The msdash files are provided in case you don'[t have a full backup of your current hard drive. I'm assuming you're about to try and use pirrup's "Hotswap without eeprom backup" tutorial. Great tut, but you have to be a bit more on the advanced side.
Just do what the tutorial says, step for step. And in regards to your last question, yes it's possible. But you need to have the original HDD plugged into the xbox to perform the hotswap. Hi guys,
still on the case to get these xbox's sorted - just wondered if anyone could help with a couple of queries really...
i) the torrent from aiddeluxe.com for AID contains a corrupt .rar file - is there anywhere else to get this file from (i think it is .r02) ?
ii) i appreciate that AID is more recent than Slayer's Auto Installer, but does it do anything new/better that will help me in particular restore my XBOX1 (which has no EEPROM files or backups of any kind - i think maybe even the drive has been formatted)
iii) i've read elsewhere on these forums that the 'hotswap' tutorial 'doesn't work' ... i'm still going to give it a go, but just wondered if anybody can verify that it does indeed work or if anybody knew of any more info or documentation on this method. i see a reply in this post saying i need the original HDD plugged in ... i do have the original HDD, but it has changed a lot since i started messing around with it. Is this 'Hotswap' method suitable to prepare a NEW hard disk drive without any of the original data???
