Hey all, I purchased a HD from someone. Well, now I know why price was soooooo good. Turns out, the drive must've been locked. When I pop it in a modded machine to format it just keeps looping back to the blue AID screen that asks me if I want to format it.
If I try to boot it without AID disk, I end up just getting error code 06.
I am pretty convinced this HD was locked and someone parted out their mod and never bothered to unlock the drive. It's a WD drive. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can salvage the drive?
I know there is an online program out there that can do it, but they force you to pay 60.00 to use it. Not worth it since I already have 40 bucks invested in the drive. I have no idea what program was used to lock the drive as the original seller never responded to emails.

Very interesting.
I installed it, now I am going to pop the other HD into my PC and see what I can accomplish. I see that there are some purchase options so am wondering if it's going to make me pay once I hit a certain point. However their price is much much less than the other company.
I'll post my results if I go through with it.

It's well worth the headache for that price, I've seen that drive as low as $80 and as high as $100. Man I hope you get it unlocked, good luck.. _________________ Xbox V1.3

but ill always be willing to buy it if you cant.. but one thing.. why would you have to put it on ebay? I'm an admin here, and many people can vouch for me..

I would go to WDC.com and check the warranty status. If it is still in warranty just send it back to WD and they will send you a new (refurbished) one, and all it costs you is shipping to get it there. _________________ I think I like fixing Boxes more than using them!

Unfortunately, the warranty was expired by a measly month when I first attempted to use the drive. I did contact WD and since the warranty started during the manufacturing month and not the actual month purchased they told me as long as I had the receipt they would RMA it for me. But, since I purchased the drive second hand so to speak, obviously I do not have the original sales receipt.

well, i figured since you started out trying to get it to work, and not selling it, i pretty much assumed you did indeed have it. Good thinking though, as i am one of the more 'over looking' buyers on this site..

Hey dangermouse, I finally got around to running that app. It's running as we speak and states that there is approximately 74mins to go and it should be unlocked.
Cost me $19.95, which is much better than the 60+ dollars the other company wanted to do the same thing!!
At least now I'll have a spare unlocked 200GB HD laying around...lol.
If anyone is having the same issues and doesn't want to try a hotswap or anything like that, I highly recommend this easy to use application. I know that the HD manufactures have their own tools that would probably do the same. I wish they made them available to the general public. _________________ Xbox 1.4

Well, the app finished and it actually did unlock the drive.
I highly recommend this program to anyone who needs to unlock a drive. What's nice is depending on the size of the HD the price to use the app changes. So, you don't get stuck spending $20 on a small drive.
Total runtime for my 200GB HD was about 1.5 hours.
I wish I would have used this app a several days ago when I did a mod for someone. I could have made a few extra bucks by furnishing the HD as they originally requested. Instead, they went to Best Buy and bought a Seagate 200GB for almost $120 _________________ Xbox 1.4
