Hey guys,
I'm hoping someone might be able to tell me if the problem I have might be solved with the hotswap.
I recently installed a x3 in my old xbox and installed a 250 gb hd. Everything was good until I decided to soft mod and upgrade a second box for the bedroom. I changed the eeprom of the modchip box to allow the softmod box to use the bigger hard drive which worked really well.
Unfortunately, I think I took a wrong turn somewhere because the modchip box will only boot from the softmod 8gb hard drive. If I try to boot from the original hard drive I get a hang on the ind bios screen and can't boot from games either. (I have the eeprom from both original hard drives, but not the replacement for the modchip box)
If this sounds like a common problem where the hot swap will be useful, I'd appreciate a little point in the right direction.

Is this your first softmod that you've tried? Are you sure that your linux disc you've made for your 250 hd is made correctly? Here is a small check list of things to check:
1. If you made a linux disc that didn't work and then tried making a new one, you'll need to unlock your hardrive again before you try using the new disc.
2. Are you sure about the xbhd linux folder being done correctly?
a. When you open your c: folder, you should see everything from the c: drive and not an additional C: folder (same with D
b. Your eeprom is in d:/udata/2158554/00000000000000/backup copy everything in this folder and paste it in your eeprom folder for the linux disc.
If that does not work, list specifically where you are having a problem in the process and hopefully we'll be able to figure it out.

well I didn't use the linux disk for install. And yes, this was my first softmod upgrade that I tried. I used my modchip box for changing the eeprom of the upgrade hard drive for my soft mod box. I was following the directions for the nknave install using a modded box. But it seems that what is optional in one quide is mandatory in another, so I think a step was left out.
My softmod upgrade works fine now, but my original with a hardware mod won't accept the 250 gb hard drive that had been in it(or the original8gb).
However, the softmod's 8 gb will work, and I assume if I take it out again, that the softmod's upgraded drive will work too.
I get either a missing kernel or the black screen telling me my xbox requires service.
I am just not sure what my options are. I think taht I have a eeprom issue for the modchip box, but I don't know how to get the right info back into it without being able to boot a disc with the affected drives being installed.
Looking through the forums, the problem seems similar to a lost key/locked hard drive. I don't have a eeprom for the upgrade of my modchip hard drive.
You'll need to ftp in to your xbox and copy your c and d drives over to your pc. Then follow the previous message's instructions and you should be set. This is a very simple method of upgrading your hd size. I hope that helps you.

Well I thank you for your responses, but part of the problem I have is that I cannot access my hard drive.
After I upgraded my softmod hard drive and used the modchip xbox to set the eeprom to the original stock drive I had problems. I couldn't put the original upgraded drive back into my modchip box without having the error screens and bios freezes.
I don't know exactly how everything comes together, but I have an basic idea that the modchip allows access around the eeprom when its unlocked. If its locked and applied to a different xbox with a modchip, I would still need to unlock it before I would have access. (If I am off a bit, please don't start the flames)
I am going to look into unlocking the drives because I can't do anything to my files that are on the drive the way that the box is now. I am limited to removing my 250gb drive from my modchip box to install the 8gb drive from my softmod box.
My first thought was that I had fried the drive somehow, but I have since dismissed that somewhat.
I guess my problem would probably be suitable for the modchip discussions, so I will look to see what I can find.

I think your problem is that you should have unlocked the 250gig hdd before you took it out.Now its locked with the wrong eeprom.Put the hdd from the softmodded xbox back in your chipped box, change the the epprom back to the original eeprom from the chipped box(make sure its unlocked when your done before you take it out). Then put the 250 back in and it should work.Now unlock the 250 gig, then you can go ahead with the hdd upgrade for the softmodded xbox.I had the same problem the first time i tried doing that.

Thats exactly what it was. I had spent some time at work yesterday thinking about what happened and how to "go back". What I came up with is that the hard drive was in fact still locked and had the wrong eeprom.
I went home to try to unlock it using the hot swap method but I just couldn't get it done right.
I'd always have the hesitation in booting and have the xboxhd program tell me that the drive was still locked and that funtionability would be limited.
Oh well. I was a bit concerned about screwing with the eeprom again after messing things up a bit, but I took the plunge and did just that.
After getting the xbox eeprom to the original I was then able to swap back to its retail drive and put the softmod's hard drive away. I was able to boot from the original hard drive, but I was not able to get my 250 gb hard drive to work at first.
I ended up finally being able to unlock the 250gb after loading up Chimp. I used the 250gb as a slave and unlocked it from the motherboard's eeprom. Finally!!! This was a much needed success after all that time trying to hot swap and move the drive to the pc. Unfortunately, the drive must have been somewhat corrupted because it still wouldn't boot.
Feeling a little more confident now, I knew that I could use the xboxhdm program to access the drive now, so I decided to give that a shot to see if I could recover the drive without losing all of my games that I spent a day or so ripping. The program, once I got into it worked pretty smoothly and copyied my backup C Drive that I put on the install disc. It fixed whatever problems were in the system and left my F Drive alone. On my first boot after swapping the hard drive from the pc, my 250 gb booted right up!
After all this, I would say from my experiences, that I should have unlocked any drive if I was going to pull it out and mess with the eeprom. Rather than using my modchip box to change the eeprom of the larger hard drive for the soft mod box, I would probably use Config Magic, boot and hotswap then take care of the configurations right there from the soft mod box.
I didn't get a chance to see your post till this morning Chris, but had I seen it last night before I tried to fix it again, it would have confimed my suspicions about what happened and probably eased my mind that my new $97 Samsung drive wasn't doomed to be a doorstop. I feel better about the whole process now that I know a little more about the xbox and how to get around certain protective measures. But, overall, I think I could spend a lot more time to learn about deeper aspects and still not have it all figured out.There are really a lot of useful tools that people have come up with and finding out which ones are appropriate for what purposes is the real challenge.
Long winded I know, but just wanted to post that I got some problems fixed and to give props to those whose software I used. Thanks guys.
