I have a question bout this goddamn networking shit, I am trying to network using my dlink NIC and a router, a netgear fast ethernet switch (I am assuming this is a router) do i need a special program for the router to work or what? everytime i connect a ethernet cable from my NIC to my router? my comp freezes. I've tried everything, upgrading to xp, different NICs, i dont know what else to do........the only thing i can think of (besides buying a new comp or upgrading the one i got) is to try a crossover cable and connect the pc directly to the xbox, im lost.....

We know it's frustrating, but swearing doesn't help you resolve your problem or motivate people to help.

If your "router" is not a router but a hub, than you either need a router or a crossover cable.

A router normally has the software built into it and the difference between a router and a hub or switch is

Routers are physical devices that join multiple wired or wireless networks together. Technically, a wired or wireless router is a Layer 3 gateway, meaning that the wired/wireless router connects networks (as gateways do), and that the router operates at the network layer of the OSI model.

Hub is a small, simple, inexpensive network device that joins multiple computers together.

Network switch is a small hardware device that joins multiple computers together within one local area network (LAN). Technically, network switches operate at layer two (Data Link Layer) of the OSI model.

I didn't say your "router" was a hub.

I said "If your "router" is not a router but a hub, than you either need a router or a crossover cable. " You didn't seem to know what it was.

Keep in mind that your Xbox must be modded (hard or soft) to FTP files back and forth.
