been playing around with system link connection options. So far, I have been able to dorectly connect with a patch cable and also connect through a router. The other day, I was surprised to find that I could connect my XBox to my laptop with the patch cable, set my laptop to shared internet, and have access to the net with the xbox. So, I figured thats all I needed to get my xbox on another netowork. Does not seem to work for system link play.
I took my xbox and laptop to a friends house. Was able to connect my laptop to the wireless network. Connected my XBox to the laptop and was able to get nework access with the xbox. But I am not able to see any network games from the other xbox.
Anything I can try?
Thanks

Hi kazbear,
System link is very simple.
- If you are connecting 2 x xboxes directly together you should be using a CROSSOVER CABLE.. (this is not a normal network patch cable).
- If you are connecting 2 x xboxes via a router/hub/switch you should use normal rj45 network leads (NOT CROSSOVER).
Once you connect both xboxes to the router/hub or directly just start hosting a new systemlink game and then boot the other xbox after it has been setup.. You should find the new system link game straight away and be able to join.
Sorry, I am using a crossover cable. My mistake. The standard connections work for me. Also, I do use Kai and XBConnect. I guess my real question is about connecting through a PC. I can plug into my wireless laptop and not have to worry about physical location of the XBox. That actually works fine for kai, but if I want to connect to another xbox on the same LAN, this setup does not work. I have to plug directly into the LAN (With a standard cable) or directly into the other XBox (With a crossover cable). The XBox plugged into the network through another PC is not seen by another XBox plugged directly into the LAN.
Is the anyway to make this setup work?

yes there is a very easy way to make this setup work assuming the laptop is running XP, instead of using connection sharing, set up a MAC bridge on the laptop and then on the conntection that is going to the laptop set the gateway and DNS route to the router address, windows wil handle the rest of the interpretation, but basically from the xbox's point of view it will be conected directly to the router, just using the laptop as a passthrough. it wil obtain an IP from the router itself although you may have to manually input the DNS, as this information is occasionally not passed to the xbox fast enough for it to auto detect before it times out
The best part of this setup is it automatically reconfigures, if you unplug the xbox or plug in any other console it will carry the settings forward hope this helps
