I haven't heard of this in an Xbox before, but I've heard about (and seen) a few PS2s that make strange noises while trying to play DVD movies.
The games work fine, but it didn't seem to like most DVDs.
(BTW, all originals, on an un-modded PS2).
Your guess is as good as anyones, unless someone else can explain it _________________

Well it could mean your dvd rom is ready to give up or it could mean that it needs to be regreased and cleaned but the last time I heard a dvd rom grinding the motors were dying so it couldnt keep the speed up anymore. _________________

For what it's worth, my xbox DVD-ROM sounds different when I put media in it that it cant read. Most of the time you cant even hear it, but if I put a CD-R/RW in it, it makes a "sssssst.......ssssst.....ssssst" sound as it trys to read the disc. _________________ Xbox - 1.4 Halo SE

I would try burning the game on different media. One that you know works well with your Xbox.
I tried a disc that worked great in my friend's Xbox, and when I inserted it in mine, the Disc Drive would "grind" away. It still managed to load the game, but I took it out since I didn't like the noise. It was some cheap no-name Disc.
I have never encountered this with the Ritek media I use.
I hope that it isn't a sign that the drive is going to crap out because I just got my Xbox.
Just remember that different drives like different media. _________________ Xbox v1.0a
