I am looking into buying the x3 chip with the solderless adapter since i dont trust myself to solder in the piece. Can anyone give feedback on the package. Do you like it. Was it easy to install. Do you recommend it.

Thanks

It kind of depends on the version of xbox you have, I would try and figure that out first. If you have a 1.0-1.5 version xbox, installation is a breeze with the solderless adapter. If you have a 1.6, it can still be pretty easy, just a few more connections to make. If, on the other hand, you have a 1.6C system, it's a little more tricky. The only way to identify if you have a 1.6C xbox is to actually open it up and look at the small D0 holes and see if they're filled in. I had a 1.6C box and had to do a little tinkering. I actually had to purchase a fiberglass pen, some VERY small needles, and a lighter. I had to scrap off the enamel coating on top of the motherboard then heat up the smallest needle I could find then actually punch a hole through so the connections could be made. Still a hell of a lot easier than soldering, but make sure to figure out your xbox version before going ahead with anything. Otherwise, I love my X3 with the solderless adapter, SO MANY FEATURES!!!! Hope that helps.

If the box itself is 3 years old, it's probably not a 1.6 then, those are usually the newest ones that were released. I'm betting yours is between a 1.0-1.5. There are a few other ways to tell without opening your box, but the only way to really know for sure is to open it up. If you're going to chip it, you might as well open it up and know how to do it so you're ready when your chip arrives. There are a few tutorials in our database that show you how to look up your xbox version.

First off I would like to say X3 is the best choice you could make as far as modchips go. 2nd I personally hate the xapter (solderless adapter), if you gonna put a modchip in either learn to solder or have someone do it, cause the conection is just better. Solderless has so many problems such as the d0 not sticking. Go the solder route u will be better off.

Yeah, I would try and attempt a pin header install, since you don't have a 1.6 xbox. With a 1.6 xbox you have to use a LPC rebuild board and it gets tricky. There is a detailed X3 Pin Header install tutorial located right here at xbox-hq. It really isn't too difficult. But if you still don't feel comfortable, you can always go the solderless route.

i am trying to install the chip and all was going well until i turned in on. i only get a red light. when i put on the solderless adapter, i did not put holes in the solder(since i have a 1.0, the holes are soldered). right now they are just sitting on it but the chip lights up. do i have to put holes through the solder?
