I thought the directions were pretty explicit. It's telling you to solder the wires on the "underside" of the Motherboard. As long as the wire is affixed to the solder you are going to have a connection. If you tinned the wires, then just layed it on the existing solder point and heat the end of the wire, it will create a joint to the existing solder point. Even if you didnt tin the wires, you will still get a good connection by heating the existing solder.

Hope that helps you a little.

I asked the creator of the guide. He said...

"I have a photo in my guide of the wires after being soldered. The wires, solder, soldering iron, etc. is all used on the same side of the board. Install the pinheader first. Then attach the 5 wires, one at a time. Put the wire in the hole on the motherboard first, and solder it, then at the other end, hold the wire against the tip of the pin of the pinheader (with needle nose pliers, unless you want to burn your fingertips!) and as you re-melt the solder, it will attach to the wire."

So it's like what you said, you're basically just remelting the solder and putting the wire into it. I was just confused because, he is saying put the wire onto the end of the pin which I assumed would be poking out of the solder, when in reality the end of the pin is covered in solder too. Right? Thanks.

Finding 30 gauge wire and a desoldering braid is turning out to be quite a task. I talked to the manager of the local Radio Shack and he doesn't carry either, nor does the nearest hobby shop. I don't know where else to look (Home Depot and Lowes didn't have them either).

Does the wire need to be 30 gauge? I can find 26...

Radio Shack should carry Desoldering Braid. If your local store doesn't have it, you can order it online. Here's the link.

Hope that helps.

K THanks a lot man, I went there and used the store locator to get everything I needed. God, SO NERVOUS about takign the soldering iron to my Xbox's mobo, there's no way in hell I'm doing it without practice. I could recite the "soldering-101" manual by memory but im sure doing it is a different story than knowing how to do it. I"m going to find something I don't want, break it, and try to practice.

Good Luck..don't worry, it's not that difficult once you get the hang of it. I wanted to purchase a set of "helping hands" from radio shack and they discontinued them and clearanced them out. My local store got rid of them for 11.00 a piece...anyone know where I can find one of them or something similar??

later all
