Newbie here and just wanted to say hello to all and that I am finding a plethera of information. I just recieved a new Xbox and I am researching what I can do with a softmod.
First of all, just made a donation because the site has tremendous info and better than all the rest I have been at. Not sure if I am even going to mod, but feel the donation is put towards a good thing for everyone.
I am interested in modding since I saw XBMC. I would like to use my box as a media player in which I can still play games too. Basically, I would like to know what other features apps that can be used with a soft modded box.
Here is what I would like for sure:
Ability to play games from disk or HDD.
Switch HDD to larger one
Ability to watch DVD's from disk or HDD (without the dongle)
Ability to move files to and from PC
Connect to free online gaming
Connect to Xbox Live
Those are what I would like to do. From exploring the net, I think this can be done. Can someone verify this for me?
Also, if anyone could suggest other apps that may be of use, please do so I can look them up too.

you can do all that, but there are some limitations.
connecting to xbox live is possible, but you must use only original games, and you must run retail mode, by either cold booting, or installing SID 4's Ndure.
Free Online gaming? If you mean xbox live!, then no, in no way we offer to hack it, and you must have a credit card no matter what to get an account. There's system link tuneler alternatives like Xlink and XboxConnect, these are clients that run on your computer, and allow you to play games via system link with other's that have it, and yes there's tons of ppl. Sadly, they only play Halo 2, nothing else.
Upgrading hdd, yes, faily easy for softmods, and for mochips, but remember that if you plan to go on xbox live, you must have the account made on your final hdd, so if you made your account already, no can't go on xbox live if you upgrade hdd, cause they will detect it's not the same hdd, and that's modded enough for them to ban you.
Playing games from dvd and hdd, yes, softmods and chips do this, but to play games from hdd, you must upgrade, cause xbox comes with a stock 8 or 10 gig, and you can only store from 4.8-6.8 gigs only, and most games are at least 3 gigs, so upgrade is needed if you plan to have games in your hdd.
Dashboards like Evox, UnleashX, and xbox media center offer FTP access, so that means, you can move files in and out, just make sure that if you don't use SID 4, you may break your softmod if not carefull, luckly SID 4 prevents you from breaking the softmod.
Playing DVD Movies without dongle, and region free, also macrovision is removed.
Either use Xbox Media Center (newest releases), or simply use the app called, DVDX2 by Xecuter.
As for suggestions on apps, it depends on what you want, and what is your main purpose, what I do suggest is emulators.
Emulators to play n64, psx, snes, gba, nes, genesis, atari, and most of the good old systems, right on your xbox.
There's also linux, but that's something your gonna make your choice on, and to be honest, it's not really worth it, except for XDSL.

Hey thanks for the info. Sounds like I am on the right path.
The free online gaming was the link up that you mentioned. I have briefly read a little on Kai and not exactly sure of all the details of it or any ohter link connect method.
Since I want to play Xbox Live and I have an account on my current HDD now, and I would like to continue to be able to, I cant upgrade my HDD. So, could I just store the games on my PC's HDD and move back and forth as I want to play them from the Xbox Hdd. I'm am not condoning Piracy of other games, just the games I own. I like this feature so the disks will have less chances of being scratched and ruined, and I thought I read it was better to run off HDD anyway, but I may be mistaken.
Oh, I've been checking into the SID4, that almost sounds too simple to work compared to all the other tutorials that I have read about exploits. I guess that will be the best $10 I have spent this year, by donating.

you can do this for you xbox.
Upgrade softmod, have single boot on your large hdd, and use that for your mod, and use your stock hdd with no mods at all to go on live.
of course you'll have to at least run SID 4's eeprom backup via menu, then ftp to xbox to get your eeprom backup, and your not obligated to install softmod after backing up eeprom
Just few hints and tips. _________________ Xbox v1.1
