Hi guys,
Great site, lots of info!
I am getting my xbox today and plan on doing a softmod and installing a 120 hard drive that a friend is giving me. The hard drive will already be "xbox ready" with a bunch of software on it.
My plan is this:
1. softmod the xbox using "modding the xbox in 10 min" article
2. put in the new drive and see what happens...?
My question is what do you suggest is the correct way to get it all working without destroying the data on the 120 gig hard drive? I've already downloaded AID 2.11 and read quite a bit
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

My worry is that you will need to lock that HDD if you're going to try to use it with a softmodded box. I would hope that it's currently unlocked or you've been given the key to the hdd. You will need to run the game exploit but avoid formatting. _________________ http://twitter.com/HQ_Shark2th

Can a chip modded xbox work unlocked? I've read about locking the hdd, but does that have to be on the specific xbox that you will be using the hdd on?
I'm also getting a modded xbox with a Xecuter 2.3 lite chip and a 120 hdd, does that help with my situation?
Thanks you!

Yes a chipped box can operate unlocked except to access the original Xbox dash. Or to go on XBL (which I still don't recommend) and yes the hdd must be locked (or married) to the softmod box it will be running on.

It might. You could always work with the chipped box to get the hdd for the softmod working. Also in the event of a fubar, it may be possible for the chipped box to rescue the softmods hdd even if locked given certain circumstances. _________________ http://twitter.com/HQ_Shark2th

Let's say that the 120 gig hard drive is not locked, and I have already softmoded my (ver 1.5 or 1.6) xbox, what's next?
1. If I replace the original 10 gb hard drive with the new one that I am getting how will I copy the softmod over to the new drive while still making sure that the existing software is not overwritten?
2. I have now in my possession, the other xbox with a Xecuter 2.3 lite chip. If I replace this xbox's hard drive with my new one with the existing software what will happen? Will the xbox function? Will I do any damage to the xbox and mod chip (bios?).
What would you do? Suggestions welcome ... even any pointers in the right direction for some reading for me.
Thank you again.

Me personally, I've given up trying to maintain and deal with running softmods. The hardware mod chip is just to forgiving. A softmod is extremely limited in what you can do and how you can do it, and seems insanely fragile. Don't get me wrong, it is cool as sh!t what they can do with those font overflow exploits in the save game. And if I was never going to swap out the HDD, it might be manageable, but the PITA factor of not being able to boot an unlocked drive, not booting unsigned code from the DVD, and not having FTP built-in support makes a mod chip just awesome. Plus, you don't have to worry about some new game upgrading your MSDASH and totally screwing your softmod one day...
Just my $0.02.
To answer your question, I wouldn't do any hard drive upgrades to the softmod system. The hard-mod should work just fine with the new larger drive (provided it isn't locked) and depending on what is on it. You shouldn't screw anything up trying it...worst case, it has something totally screwy on it or corrupt, and you just prep/format the drive and go from there. Again, the options are much greater and the details much less critical with a hard-mod...

jhondra,
thanks for your reply.
I just don't have the funds to get the mod chip done. I'm the type who would rather do it
myself then to pay someone to do it, and I don't have much experience with soldering... yet.
I don't think I'm making myself clear. The 120 gb drive is one that I am getting from someone
and it is packed full of software. I want to make sure that I don't format or delete any vital
info off of it. It is going in my xbox that I just softmodded. Maybe later I will hardmod it,
but for now I'm going with the softmod. I also have another xbox that has a modchip on it, but
the DVD drive does not eject very often
I guess my solution will be to borrow a hard drive for my softmodded xbox, and use this
Then hopefully the 120gb drive will work without any fuss in my other xbox (with the modchip and picky dvd drive). Then I will network my 2 xboxes and FTP the software from one to the other.
unless someone has another suggestion..?

If the data on the drive is important, then yes, that sounds like the best plan...I don't even want to know what is on the drive...
