Im in progress of putting 2 400Gig Seagate monsters into a box now, no problems yet...
However I dont see any real need to lock your HD(s) unless you are using the stock drive.
Im running a rig with 2 300GB HDDs and neither are locked. Its been running that way for a good 6 months now. I just have so many movies and stuff I put on my Xbox rahter than my PC I would rather be able to pull the disk out and keep the contents of either my movie drive, or my game drive (to keep all my Roms) just incase my MoBo bites the dust.
But Ive found that the Linux HD maker for your PC is the way to go with Seagates (dunno why) the XBHQ-AID will prep a WD disk just fine, but the larger Seagates I have had to prep on my PC with that nifty boot disk.
So you are on the right track so far.
And another thing, dont use the file transfer feature on that boot disk, its CRAPTASTICALLY slow... where it says grab a beer... Youll be done with 2 kegs by the time its done.
Hope yopu get some other good input, and good luck. _________________ -Scourge "Rx = +/_\"

Perhaps I'm missing something here but if this is a drive upgrade for a softmod I don't think not locking the drive is a choice. Modchip's can get around that but to my knowledge (limited) softmodders have to lock their drives? yes? no?

Correct. At least at this time, there is no way to get a softmod box to boot an unlocked HDD...
