Question I've been so impressed by what everyone has been able to do with their xboxes that I decided I need to have a modded xbox. So instead of messing with my own xbox I bought my friend's box. Apparently this xbox is unmodded but freezes at the startup when the xbox logo appears. He is bringing it over this weekend.
My first thought is that it is over heating, but I can't imagine the xbox getting so hot at the initial start up. So now I'm asking the wise xbox forum for advice and guidance on what I should look at and try. Please any help would be much appreciated!

Here's what I would do. I would physically boot it up and see if there are any error codes present. That can give you a better starting point. If it's hanging up at the splash screen it's hard to tell exactly what the cause is.

With your thought on the overheat, if that's the case then the processor is probably shot. But, I don't know if that would cause your problem or not.

Or, if you dont' get a solid starting point from anyone here, you could always start by process of elimination. Start with the bios, dashboard, stuff like that. Did he try to mod his machine unsuccessfully? Get as much info out of him as you can.

ok.. does the little microsoft logo come up under the main xbox logo.
if it doesnt show microsoft under the XBOX LOGO then im guessing he has tried to flash his motherboard bios whic isnt a good idea..

If the xbox is booting the processor is fine...

My suggestion is this:
Order the cheapest modchip you can and install it.. If the xbox boots fine you can guarantee that the motherboard bios is corrupted..

You can reflash the ONBOARD TSOP but i wouldnt suggest it.. You must soldier too points on the xbox motherboard..

Also, Are you sure he hasnt tried to mod the xbox using SOFTWARE EXPLOITS like the 007 game save hack..? If he has modded it using the software hack i cant really help you as i have no experience with software mods only modchips.

Ok,
I have turned on the xbox and the flubber boot sequence occures. When it freezes it stops at the Xbox spash screen and the microsoft name pops up underneath the xbox spash screen. I tried putting a game in the xbox and it flashes red as it tries to read it. Then it just stops after a few second as if it times out. So then I tried putting a DVD in the drive. Again the xbox flashes green while it tries to read it.

Suddenly it takes me to the dashboard and gives me the dirty disk error. At this point it refuses to read any game or DVD so now i try a music cd and it plays the music cd, but it won't copy it to the hard drive. While moving around in the dash board things are sometimes get chopy with long delays before anythign happens. So finially i go to the memory option of the hard drive in the dash board. It tells me that there are 0 blocks used and 0 blocks available in the xbox. And if i choose the hard drive to go into it freezes.

Basically this tells me that the hard drive is Fucked up and all i need is to get a modchip and reformat the current hard drive or get a new hard drive. Am I way off? Any suggestions? I've started looking at modchips and I'm not too sure what i should get, or even if getting one will fix the xbox.

It definitely sounds like you are heading into a direction that could net you positive results. The fact that it's loading the bios (thats why you see MS underneath the X in the splash screen) leads me to believe that's okay. It seems that the dashboard is screwed up, which does reside on the HD. I betcha if you buy a modchip and a new HD and download DJB's autoinstaller you may just have yourself a winner. I don't have any knowlege on reformatting a stock HD with retail info, but maybe someone else can help with that.

I am hoping that the dirty disk error however isn't a second issue. If so, DVD Drives are super duper cheap. You can even attempt a laser cleaning, I suggest manually, or even upping the voltage of the laser. When the time comes, I have a tutorial for that.

Forahobby seems like he has a pretty good grasp of what it could be also, so wait for his response before putting out any ching. I am still wet behind the ears, but I would be assuming the same thing you were. I am curious to know if I was correct. However, if you do try the modchip and HD approach and it still doesn't work, you always have a chip and HD for another machine.

While I wait to see if Forahobby can confirm whether or not i am on the right track with fixing my xbox with a new mod chip and hard drive, I just read about reformatting the xbox hard drive from the dashboard. Apparently if you call M$ support and say the right things they will give you a code you push with your controller and it erases all the saved gaves and resets the setting on the xbox hard drive. I tried calling this afternoon and after 43 minutes of talking to this lady she still refused to give me the code specifically for my xbox. Apparently I didn't say the right things because all she would tell me was that i had to pay 90 dollars to send it in to be fixed.

I figure if my hard drive is shot to begin with I might as well try to do the software reformat from the dashboard. I just wish that I could be completely sure that its not the motherboard or anything else.

Well I got my "reformatting" code from M$ and it didn't work.... Soo I'm back to an xbox that still doesn't work. The question is do I buy my mod chip and new hard drive. And the second huge question is which mod chip do i buy. Damn I'm such a N00b!

Hey, how did you get your reformatting code from MS? There is another member here that asked and was told they couldnt get. What did you say to them for them to offer?

Here's what I think you will need to do. If you don't opt for any of the software mod exploits, which I don't recommend anyway. Then get a chip and a HD and just mod the puppy. You'll like it better any how.

As far as chips go, makes no difference really. Xecuter Lites, Xecuter Pros, Xeniums, Xenium Ice...they are all good. They all have their different features, but basically arrive at the same point. The Xecuter 2.3B seems to be a very popular chip. I think the Xenium is probably in the top three of popularity. The Xenium Ice is the first chip that is 1.6 capable. Even though you probably don't have a 1.6 it gives you a good indication how on the ball the developer is. I personally like the Xenium, but I am in the process of getting an Xecuter 2.3 chip installed on another machine to check it out.

Whatever you decide will be fine. Enjoy!

This might help anyone who wants to get their specific reset code from M$. I called the 1-800-4MY-XBOX for customer support. When they asked me what was wrong I told them that I could get to the dashboard of my xbox but my xbox refused to read any DVD's and games (dirty disk error). Then I told them that when I checked my memory it said 0 blocks available and 0 blocks used. The next part is the key part of what to say. When I select the xbox's hard drive to open up inorder to try to delete my old saved games I get an error message. The error message tells me to call microsoft support in ONLY ONE LANGUAGE. It doesn't say it in all the different lanugages, instead it only says it in English.

Once you tell person this they will take down your serial number and then tell you a code you need to type with your controller in the settings/system info section. Don't worry they will walk you through the process.

Hope this helps!

I wanted to start a new subject, but I also wanted to make sure everyone knew where I started and where I am at now.

I have connected an Apple XV modchip to my xbox and replaced the hard drive. I was hopping that the problem was the hard drive but now I'm worried. I can boot from the modchip by holding down the on button and get the orange xbox boot screen. After the xbox boots it gives me error 12 which is some error having to do with the dashboard, which makes sense since I don't have anything on the new hard drive.
I found and downloaded the slayer evox auto installer .ISO and burned it onto a CD-RW. When I put the cd into the xbox and boot the machine I get the same error 13 message. Does this mean the xbox refuses to read this particular CD-RW?! I certainly hope so. Tomorrow I'll go buy some other nice name brand like Kodak CD-RW. Any comments or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks

hey jmack,

im sure your xbox is ok well by the sounds of it.. Its trying to read the dashboard files when you get the e12 and probably doesnt like the cdrw your using so it trys to boot the dash again after reading.. Do like you say and buy some other brands.. I havent heard of a xbox showing a error code and not being able to be fixed so hang in there..

If you havent already read this tutorial about which cd's work best in what xbox go and read it now.

Xbox dvd drives and best type of media for each.
http://xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-76.html

e.g. thomson, phillips, sumsung (best heheh).. Smile

ERROR CODES:

e12 - kernel - DVD parameters (PIO/DMA)

e13 - kernel - Dashboard launch fail (due to missing/bad key, or anything else that would prevent it from running) and the dashboard didn't specify why it failed.

Hope to hear you getting it going real soon!

Forahobby,

Thanks for the vote of confidence on the condition of my xbox. I've been pretty worried since I've gotten it. I've burned memorx cd-rw's and I'm not getting anywhere. What specific cd-rw have you had working? I just bought some maxwell cd-rw's but i'm thinking of returning them, saving my 10 dollars, and just try adding a different dvd drive. I'll need to buy a power splitter, as showen the tutorials, but it might be easier than spending lots of money on different cd-rw media.
