Specs:
Xbox v1.4
X2.3Lite+ chip
160GB/250GB HDD
4981.06 BIOS
Evox Dash v? on both drives
DVD2Xbox v0.4.9 & 0.5.7

Ok, here's the deal... I have a "Mature" HDD with games of various ratings and a "Youth" HDD with games rated E to T.

Some games that had previously worked just fine will not run now. When I choose them from the autolist, the Evox loading screen appears for a while, then it goes back to the main menu. There are copies of some of the games are on both drives. A game that doesn't work on one drive is not working on the other either. Screwy, huh? Keep in mind that these games had previously worked just fine.

I put in the original disc to reinstall the games on the HDD and DVD2Xbox v0.4.9 locks up at its main menu. I have to reboot the Xbox. I can't get back to the dashboard. On one of the HDD, I've installed DVD2Xbox v0.5.7. it doesn't lock up like v0.4.9 did, but it doesn't recognize the F: drive. I back the game up on the E:, but it still doesn't work.

I figured the BIOS must be corrupt, so I created a new v4981.06 install disc and flashed away. Still no luck!

The mod chip must have gone bad! I have an extra X2.3Lite+ (long story), so I took out the old chip and put in the new and flashed the BIOS. IT STILL DOESN'T WORK RIGHT!

Back in April, before I had a copy of DVD2Xbox, I FTP'd a few games onto my computer's HDD, then I FTP'd them back to the Xbox. One of these games is one that has stopped working, so I FTP'd it back to the Xbox, but it still does NOT work!

This all happened within the past week.

Is my Xbox fussed up or what?!?!?

This is my logic... please tell me where it's wrong!

1. unlikely that BIOS is the problem, as I've reflashed it and these games still won't run when they previously did with this same BIOS.

2. unlikely that both modchips are both fussed up enough to not run the same exact games, but otherwise work relatively normal.

3. the Xbox itself could be fussed. No way to verify that, other than it seems to work as it should, with the exception of the above problem. When Asmunch gets my other Xbox back to me, I'll see how it does. (Thanks, Asmunch!)

4. unlikely that these 7-8 games would all suddenly decide to corrupt themselves on both HDDs.

5. unlikely that both Dashs decided to become corrupt in the same way at the same time (without outside influence).

Therefore, I've concluded that it must be an Xbox virus! Since I'm apparently the first to discover it, I'll name it the "Xboxster". Well, at least mentioning "virus" in the subject got you to read this!

OK, OK, I'll admit that this sounds far-fetched, but why couldn't it be? Could malware Trojan Horse have been placed on a commercial game disc to fuss with modders?

What am I missing here? There must be a logical explanation!

If both dashes have gone and many games have gone screwey then it could be a shared file somewhere. I know form using windows that ot sometimes deletes parts of itself Mad These are normally shared files and screw up many apps. But I can't think of any shared files on the xbox. Just a thought.

Well, what files woud be shared between two different HDDs. Actually, I have 3 HDDs that have been affected. Is there some other factor I don't know about? I find it difficult to believe that something could just spread from one HDD to another to another. What files would be shared between the 3 HDDs?

They WERE all formatted using the same Slayers disc, but unless there was a "ticking time bomb" on Slayers, I just don't see how anything could "spread" from one HDD to another, since the Xbox is shut down each time the HDDs are swapped.

Could there be something screwy with the Xbox itself? What factors am I not considering?

IDE Controller on the motherboard? It's unlikely that it would only affect certain things but it might be that some channels aren't working and so some sectors of you drives are not being read.

Do you know anyone else that has a modded machine. If so, try your HD on their machine. I would buy the cable theory, but I think you are running two different machines, correct? So, I don't think both cables can be equally fucked up.

However, what I probably would do is this. I would probably just run slayers again and redo my entire HD, partition it, reload all apps, and go from there. The fact that you are saying the same games aren't working on two different HD's tell me that it has to be the patching or something.

I dont' know if once a game is patched, it's always patched or if that patch sorta loads each time the game does.

Can you think of anything that you recently loaded on both machines prior to them screwing up? Maybe something that you FTP'd in there. Your virus idea isn't too far fetched. Both HD's are effected exactly the same, so I could see how you thought that. I know when I get a virus on my PC that I can't seem to get rid of I just do a master recovery, reformat the HD and start from the beginning Sad

I know you have been fighting this issue for a little while now, keep us posted.

I'm hoping to have a second modded Xbox later this week. I think that will be telling. If the HDDs work just fine in the new Xbox, maybe the cable or controller is screwed up. It just surprises me that a screwed up controller or cable would only affect certain games and not others, but this IS a Microsoft gizmo, so i guess nothing should surprise me... maybe repeatedly pulling the cable off and on has screwed something up... but why just certain games on ALL HDDs????

The more that I think about this the more I think that you should just run an autoinstaller and start from square one. At least on one of the drives to see if that fixes issue. If it does, you know its the HD.

It can't be the cable. I mean, how can a cable effect two totally different HD's in the same manner. That's just not feasible. If the cable were bad, I would imagine it wouldn't even recognize the drive.

Something on the HD's is possibly corrupt. Have you tried using PxHDD Loader? I know you already tried a different version of DVD2xbox, and still have issues.

You have to think exactly what you may have done to create this issue. Have you tried launching the game with a different dashboard? Just a thought. I'd be curious if Avalaunch would load them. Something is corrupt on both HD's. Have you tried to reinstall EvoX?

I can't think of anything different that I've done. I haven't tried Avalaunch... how do I go about installing it? Do I simply download it, FTP it to the Xbox CConfused Do I need to rename it? How do I launch it or will it launch once I drag it on to C: and reboot?

I don't want to mess with reformatting the HDDs until I get the second Xbox and try the HDDs out on it. If it's screwed on that Xbox, I'll reformat and reinstall the games.

Thanks!

Well, I would imagine installing it as an app would be the easiest. That's how it is on mine, as is MXM which is another real cool dash you can try.

I just downloaded and FTP'd to my E folder, but it just depends on how yours is set up. Where do you FTP any of your other apps too?

With MXM, the only configuring I had to do was for skins. Avalaunch was already in my app folder, so I don't know if any extra configuring will be needed.

MXM was super easy! It scans for games as I am sure Avalaunch must do too, because I have games in multiple places and it auto recognized them.

But, you are correct in how I did it. FTP'd it over, rebooted and is automatically showed up in my "Launch Apps from HD" section.

RealMcCloy! You Da Man!

I loaded Avalaunch as an app, ran it, and the games worked, but not with Evox. I reloaded Evoxdash from my PC onto one of my HDDs, and now Evox dash will run the games.

I put in HDD #2 and accidentally tried running a "broken" game before reloading the new Evoxdash. It worked! Same for HDD #3!

How in the world did this happen?

I still can't get DVD2Xbox 0.4.9 to work... even after reinstalling it. Version 0.5.5? still won't recognize the F: drive, even though it's loaded on the F: drive. What gives here?

Darn! I guess I don't get credit for discovering the dreaded "Xboxster" virus!

Cool freaking beans my man!! Glad you are going in the right direction...whew.

Looks like we still have some figuring out to do though.

I'll have to piddle around a little more and see what kind of other solutions I can come up with.

I'll keep in touch...but, glad you can now play your games again.
