I just bought another box on saturday for system link/etc. Softmodded it, all seemed fine, then tried to play Halo 2, horrible whining sounds and the disc comes out with dirty great big rings in it. Same with any other game I tested it with.
Anyone else had problems like this? Just found it odd how Splinter Cell didn't get any rings upon first installing the softmod, but now it's doing it to everything.
I'm just looking for some easier option than trekking back to where I bought it (tis far when you can't drive) and getting a replacement.

thats fucked up. you should buy another drive. i bought my samsung on ebay and it works flawlessly. my thomson died like a bitch and i didnt have a drive for like 2 weeks. sorry i couldnt be more helpful _________________ XBOX

Yeah, well it's still under guarantee, so I'll just reverse the softmod and take it back. Grrr, why is nothing ever just easy?

You know i softmodded my friends xbox and he has a thompson drive in it as well. The games would skip and lock up and not even work. But i took a can of compressed air, Than i had opened the disc tray and blew the air in all diffrent directions inside the drive. Put in one of my backups and has played every cd he puts into it. So mabey give that a try get some of the dust off of the lens. Its worth a try you can pick up a can of it for like 4 bucks _________________ Xbox Ver. 1.4

Possibly, but the damage this is doing, I really don't think it's dust. It's like there's not enough space for the disc and it's being pushed right up against the tray, scratching the hell out of it.
My Halo 2 doesn't even run anymore, that was only in there for five minutes, gonna have to have a go at that disc with some metal polish or something. Grrr....
