Don't you think it'd be great if when the Xbox360 finally gets hacked and we can install a new dashboard onto it, if the developer of said dashboard added support for external HDD's, especially considering there will be USB 2.0 and Firewire ports on the console. I think it'd be GREAT to have this type of support in a hacked dashboard because we wouldn't have to buy a bigger HDD for the machine, because apparently they are getting Seagate, i think, to design a proprietary 2.5" HDD for it. Buying one of the bigger HDD's would definitely NOT be cheap, i imagine.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this matter???

Not to mention the fact that you might be able to use multiple combinations. Imagine having 2 300GB USB2.0 HDD's and 1 300GB - 500GB HDD in the firewire port!!!!!!!!

Oh the posibilities!!!!

It has to be possible. If the original MS dashboard can support a memory card, which is essentially a flash drive, then it obviously can support external drives!!!
I'm thinking that maybe it would be a firmware issue, possibly. And also another thing is that the 4 "USB" ports that the original xbox has a re USB 1.1, not 2.0, so the transfer rate would be horrendous!!

as I understand it the xbox can already
support external hard drives.
The only limitations are that you can only use
the external hdd`s for storing the same info that you`d normally have
on your memory card
(gamesaves and the like)
the other limitation is that you won`t get the data
transfrerre speeds that you`d get using usb 2.0

so why wouldnt the 360 be any different....but i guess since they are actual usb and firewire ports, it may be possible...maybe microsoft has something up there sleeve in that area anyway for them to do it...

I'd rather pay that price and have gargantuan storage of my own design instead of paying MS for a crappy 100GB slim HDD. I have a hell of a lot lore damn content than 100 bloody GB.

How usefull can it be though?
I use a 128 mb mp3 player as a memory card, you can put whatever you
like on there but nothing can be executed from there.

Anyway If people can fit a 3.5" hdd to an ipod then what would stop anyone from mounting a number of 3.5" hdd`s to the 360 apart from
space maybee?
Even then, it`s just another pc case mod waiting to happen.

You're not getting my original point. What if the developers of the new dash's were to put support for the external drives as actual drives, not like flash drives that are used now for game saves. Actual drives that can be recognized as partitions. Like the E: F: and G: partitions in large HDD's for the original Xbox right now so that executable files can be launched from them. A 300GB flash drive for game saves would be fuckin ridiculous don't you think!!!!! Besides there is talk of MS putting in a intrusion detection system into the case that will f#&@ up the machine if it's opened for modding, therefore a softmod with this feature would be BRILLIANT!![/b]

then why dont developers do that exact same things now? even tho its 1.1 it would still be there, plus the xbox i beleive can only run off of 1 main hard drive at a time for running .xbe's and such

but i dunno, im not a developer

I heard about this intrution system aswell an have come to the conclusion
that it would cause more problems then it would solve.
Imagine if the current xbox had this, bearing in mind The Dvd drives fail
in under a year in alot of cases.

and of course MS`s approach to security to date is fix it when it`s f&*ked.

I`d bet alot of money that there is a 10 year old kid out there somewere
that could hack the 360 single handed.

by the time Ms has made revisions to the 360 two or three years in
it`ll all be to late as per.

As for what if, what if MS went bankrupt before they could release this
360?

There is always hope!

I thought it was possable to swap out the dvd drive for another
hdd, I havn`t treid it, all my hdd`s are on a switch so i can only boot one at a time.

I`m sure if it was worth it someone would have done something to allow
booting of games from your usb drives, Have you any idea how slow it would be?
just transferring 100 mb to a memory card is an excuse to go and watch
tv.

USB 2.0 on the other hand.

If only Rolling Eyes
