My son has Action Replay Max for Xbox, and downloaded a save for Splinter Cell, or so he thought. It was a linux profile, and now our xbox isn't xbox anymore.... it boots up with EvolutionX, and doesn't have xbox live anywhere..... We didn't want to "mod" the xbox, which it appears we did. Is there anyway to get the xbox back to normal now? PLEASE HELP! Hubby is really upset! thanks. Laurie[/b]

when you booted up the linux profile what did you select? did you make a MS backup? if you did, then its a simple mateer of booting the linux profile up and selecting "restore MS backup" and you should be fine. if you didn't then you can still put it back to normal but its a bit harder

My son said when he installed it on the xbox from the memory card, it didn't even ask him for an MS Backup. It just automatically booted up in the EvolutionX mode. So now what?

That must be a really old softmod file. Where did you get the file from for starters?
It just so happens the orginal editions of the Games Splinter Cell, Mech Assault, and 007 Agent Under Fire (oo7:AUF) had a glitch in them allowing them to install non-M$ software (unsigned software). This allowed for a software loophole that was exploited to make a hacked dashboard (Evolution-X).
Thats what a softmod is, if you were unaware.
I have no answer to this, its a toughy, I honestly don't like softmodding, so I personally don't deal with it. There are some resident Admins here that are quite knowledgeable, especially DJB and Pirrup. Please seek to find that their answers are probably the wisest to find, for DJB actually put together one of those SOFTMOD programs, Softmod Installer Deluxe* (SID:multi-ver.)
When he asked about an "MS-Backup" He meant b/c of SID* having an option prior to dashboard install (Evolution-X) you are asked if you want to backup the unmodified Hard Drive (HDD). Yours apparently didn't have that option, leading me to believe its an older exploit.
I hope you get your problem solved, I just wanted to chirp in and give you some background info on your situation. _________________ XBOX v1.6

He got it off codejunkies.com.... and had no clue what linux was...... so how do I get ahold of those two gurus..... the name of the file is SID.Splinter.Cell.v2.0.Xbox-Hq... I guess the xbox-hq at the end should have given him a clue, but he is only 12 and he didn't realize.... Anyway, any help I can get would be appreciated. Thanks

Well, on this site it is a matter of timezones, one is in Austrailia the other Europe, so its a matter of time really. They are on daily for the most part.
And SID 2.0 should have had a backup option I believe, but then again, I don't know the full steps.
I am sure you will get a response from one of them by later today, maybe one of the members has something to chirp in. _________________ XBOX v1.6

Thanks, I sent a private message to DJB, but I am totally new to this site, so I am working on finding my way around, and the mailbox feature. But thanks again. Whether it asked for a backup or not, I am not sure..... as I wasn't here. But I have learned not to let him download anything without showing me first. Thanks again. Hopefully DJB can help me. If you download the AID then you will be able to re install the ms dash.
this wont be easy as you will need to burn it
too a disk to be able to use it.
Make sure you read all the instructions
though because it is possable to make
it a whole lot worse.
A torrent, is a small tracker file that you use in a program (ie. BitTorrent or free versions at sourceforge.net:ABC is a good one, it should be on the top downloads list also Azureus is a good one as well.)
The file you are going to download via the torrent system will be about 600 megabytes maybe more.
It will come in many .rar archives, .rar is like zip but more functional, you can download winrar at www.winrar.com or at sourceforge.net (the program is called 7-zip.)
That will finally get you a huge file that is an .iso, if you double click it, it will give you a corrupt archive error. Its not an archive. Its the disc image.
Using a program like Nero, you want to burn the IMAGE to disc. However you dont only want the one file to burn to disc (say for backup purposes) but you want that .iso to turn into mulitple files, the disc image burner will do this automatically.
You may have to use a dummy file (a blank file used to fill space on the disc). You cannot burn to CD-R b/c most xbox's can't read them. You will have to use CD-Rw' or dvd-r's.
Then when it boots, (*see note below if it doesn't boot), you will want to install the MS Dashboard to the C: partition....And thats as far as I can take you.
The AID download should occupy your day, so I would get started on that now.
Good Luck
****NOTE*****
Read closely on the Autoinstaller Deluxe Forums and website about the renaming of the main xbox executable file (.xbe) to something a vigin xbox HDD would recognize.) The standard .xbe name is default.xbe, except for the MS dash. _________________ XBOX v1.6

Don't worry about the renaming of the .xbe because the 2.02 update does this for you already (make sure you have this with AID 2.0).
To clear things up, SID 2.0 DOES have a backup function to back up your C Dirve, and I don't understand how the hell it just booted from a memory card, as the gamesave needs to be copied to the hdd in order for it to work.
Codejunkies with SID? I'm gonna have to check this out, because seriously I didn't think they would have it on there (looks like it's time for them to start checking their gamesaves I think).
If you want a clean xbox (ie no evolutionX) grab AID 2.02 and perform these steps:
1) Format your C Drive (this takes care of the softmod)
2) Go to "Install Dashboards" and install the MS Dash.
Now your C Drive should be totally clean and hack-free.
