I bought a retail xbox hd off ebay a while ago,before i knew a bit about these things! It's locked! So is it totally useless now,or can i use it somehow? Apart from a paperwight before someone says that!

There are two things never to buy on ebay.

Locked HDs and items that say, "Untested".

Untested is defined in my book as, "Underhandedly selling you something that is broken".
