No worries, newbie questions are more than welcome here
I'll tell you something right now though, if you're putting in a larger hard drive I'd advise not using Xbox Live on that Xbox. Microsoft have now found ways to detect the larger drives and will ban you immediately.
You still can get modchips though that will allow you to turn on / off the hacked bios. I personally use an AppleX V modchip which lets me choose what bios I want to boot with by holding in the power button.
Just another quick note before I go, have you heard about Xbox Connect? It's basically the same thing as Xbox Live except t's not run by Microsoft, meaning there are no modchip/hdd checks.
Hope that helps...

I have a 120GB HD and have been on XBOX live numerous times with this machine. I too have heard the horror stories about MS detecting larger HD's. I can understand them banning because of hacked bios's..but, what right do they have to tell me what size HD I put in my XBOX. What if I just want to store tons of Music CD's because I have games that they have approved of that use them (music mixer just to name one).
Is there anyone out there who has been banned because of a HD upgrade. I would really like to hear from them. I am sure it would be and has been a piece of cake for MS to tell how much HD space is available, I just don't think they have a legal right to ban someone over a HD. I guess they can claim that it's their right to refuse service to anyone for any reason, but I think if this is fact then they are going too far. _________________ Good Deals: Death@Hand, funkydopenloven, StaticMind, Slamscaper, PorscheXboxter

Hm, couldn't really tell you how much the AppleX V Modchips are worth these days, just try a search in Google for it and you should come across it. Sorry I can't be more specific...

I myself think that the xecuter modchips are the best.if i ever want to get on live i can just disable the modchip and load up into the msdash. _________________ XBOX v1.1:

Hm, not really. Xbox Live detects changed hard drives so it doesn't really matter what chip you have these days.

I have heard that so many times, but I have yet to be banned. I wonder why if they are cracking down on HD sizes that I haven't been banned yet. Not that I am complaining, I am paid up until Jan 2005. I would hate to lose that little bit of money if I got banned, as I am sure refunds aren't even given.
Is there anyone else out there on XBOX live with a larger HD and still kicking?? _________________ Good Deals: Death@Hand, funkydopenloven, StaticMind, Slamscaper, PorscheXboxter

Since this has been a topic, and one that frankly has had me somewhat worried I thought I would check into it as far as I can. I called a friend of mine who works as a programmer for a company that is owned by Microsoft.
I flat out asked him what is the criteria for banning machines. He couldn't answer my question, but put me on conference call with someone who seemed to know a little more about the situation.
First, we all know that modchips WILL get you banned from MS Live service for life. Gamertag and EEprom is nuked for sure.
Can MS detect larger HD's....YES. Can they scan to get what's on there...YES. Have they been...YES. Are they currently banning due to HD size alone.....NO.
J.D's source, whom I have never met, seems to be legit. He told me that originally MS started scanning the drives just to see how they are being used. Somewhat of a market research so they can make a decision about XBOX Next either having a HD, or just going to flash memory. Now, if you don't think that statement opened up some questions from me...HA, but of course he could not tell me if the new machine was indeed going to have a HD.
Now, this source also said that he could not guarantee that MS wouldn't use their compiled information to take future action against the machine, and/or the owner of the machine. If they can scan for evox.ini files and such, then they would indeed know that you are not just using your extra HD space for music or a plethora of game saves. This however is just my speculation from the information that I have just received.
So, am I less confused than before I initiated this phone call...YES. On the surface, it looks like we are safe with just turning off our modchips. But, is it only a matter of time before we are not, or has it already begun?
To truly know is hard because I think that as stories go down the chain and people pass them along, the story get's changed. If you don't believe me get a hundred people and tell the first one to pass on a little story like, "Bill Gates is a loving husband and a smart individual". By the time it gets to the last person you will end up with, "Bill Gates left his wife for a intelligent transexual."
So, that fact makes me wonder if when people have been banned for modchips, that they assumed they turned off their modchip. And, if they take that assumption further and add to it by assuming they were banned due to HD size, because they don't want to ASSUME they made a bonehead mistake. I know, lots of assuming going on.
I just know that I have successfully been on xbox live many times with my modded machine, that also carries a 120GIG HD. I have two friends that have been banned from xbox live. They both know that they jumped on xbox live with modchips on. They were banned IMMEDIATELY. If I get anymore updates, I will certainly let you all know. _________________ Good Deals: Death@Hand, funkydopenloven, StaticMind, Slamscaper, PorscheXboxter
