OK, I want hook up the upstairs Xbox to the soon-to-be-purchased downstairs Xbox. Also, maybe have a few friends over and hook up a few more Xboxs.

What do I need? Can I plug them all into my existing router or should it be a separate Xbox-only setup? Wireless would be great, if reliable, but I can run CAT-5 cable if needed.

Would I need a ethernet hub or a switch? I'm not sure what the difference is. Would I plug one Xbox in with a crossover cable to uplink port and the others with patch cables into the numbered ports?

Also, do I need to use original game disks, like with LIVE or can I just run from HDD?

thanks!

You can plug it straight in to your Router just as long as there's some kind of hub / switch in it. Wireless would be nice, but the wireless Ethernet adapters are pretty expensive for the Xbox, plus I don't know how reliable they are.

In regard to the Hub / Switch question, a switch is a lot more reliable for network traffic, as it only sends the network data to the specific IP address and doesn't ask every other PC / Xbox on the network if they want the information. You could easily use a crossover in an uplink I guess, but I just use patch cables now as my darn ADSL Router / Modem / 4-Port Switch doesn't have uplink Sad

If you want to try out Xbox Connect you will be able to play the games off your HDD, just make sure if you try and use Xbox Live that ALL Xbox games are not copied, plus you have your modchip turned off.

Hope this helps...

DJB gave you solid advice. On the wireless front if you are still contemplating, I just purchased the XBOX Wireless Adapter (MN-740) at target for only $39.94 which is an absolute steal since they still list for $106.00 on M$'s official XBOX site.

I have seen them online for as low as $65.00, but nothing remotely close to this. Not all Targets are having the sale, so call before you travel any great distances. Luckily my local Target still had one left. However, I picked up three additional ones from other stores and listed them on Amazon.com. They have already sold Crying or Very sad

Good luck with whatever way you decide to go.

Hm, the wireless adapters seem to be a lot less expensive over there, but wouldn't you still need some kind of wireless central point to connect the wireless LAN?

The main reason I know as much as I do about networking is I've studied it for about 1 and a half years now, so I'm hoping that I know what I'm on about, hehehe Smile

But please, let me know how the wireless setup goes for you, I'm interested to know...

Yes, you would still need that, but if you can find a nice price on the adapter it does lower your overall cost nicely Very Happy

I think Target is having some huge electronic clearance. They do this once or twice a year, I always keep an eye out. Last year I got a Palm M130 for only $79.99, and now they have a Lexmark all in one printer/copier/scanner combo'd with a 2.1 Megapixel Camera, a ream of premium photo paper for only $89.95

So many insane prices on stuff I couldn't pass up the MN-740. I don't even have a wireless router yet, still connected with Cat-5 line to Linksys wired router, but will be making the move shortly. I am sure I will pick your brain for some networking tips as I am not real strong in that area. I have two other PC's, two Xbox's and a Gateway Connected DVD Player that I am going to want to connect as well. I will probably get a Microsoft Wireless Super-G, but hear that firmware is a bugger to get configured.. So, not totally sure on which way I am going with that.

Yeah, I talked with a bunch of other people from another forum about it and only a few of them had a Target running the same deals. I don't know why they only do it in cerain areas, but they don't advertise all the products so you have to go there religiously to catch the deals. My target seems to be a very dead store as there is a Wal*Mart directly across the street. I also just grabbed a 20" Flat Screen TV, and a DVD/VHS Combo Unit for only $88.00 each....sure, the TV's a Daewoo, but it was only for my daughter's room. Keep your eye out as I would bet yours has a sale like that once in a blue moon. This one was by far the largest I have seen. Usually, they only have two or three items priced ridiculously low. This time it seemed as if 60% of the electronics department was on sale. They had this awesome Eddie Bauer Auto DVD System with a 10" LCD Screen for only $289.00 and then the add on LCD screens which were also 10" were only $98.00 each. My wife literally had to drag me outta there. It was ugly.

It's just a shame that Target in Australia don't have them.

A wireless solution would be nice, but I'd want to do my whole network and not just my Xbox -> PC if I done that. It would cost roughly around $400 or so just for my PCs (plus wireless central point) so I'll just stick with good ol' CAT 5 for the meantime Smile
