This is a problem I'm having, I'm not the best networker and hope someone could point out the flaw.
We're using: a 5 port hub - a cable modem - 2 xboxes - and straight through ethernet cables to connect everything. It's only letting one Xbox onto live while the other gets the start troubleshooter option. We've turned off all devices before connecting cables along with saying a hail mary before attempt no. 100. Basically we've tried everything with the hardware at our disposal. Can someone shed some light on this, crappy diagram below!
cable modem ---> 5 port hub ---> xbox1
''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''---> xbox2
sorry that was my attempt at a diagram of what is not working but I think should be working. please help . _________________ [XBOX v1.6b / Xecuter 3 CE / Western Digital Caviar SE 300GB HD / ATA166 IDE Cable / XCM Cystal Clear Case / Red Firework LED 80mm Fan / 12v Fan Mod / UnleashX Default Dash]

No we are using 2 separate accounts, and yes both Xboxes are set to auto detect ip and dns. It's perplexing, no? ... _________________ [XBOX v1.6b / Xecuter 3 CE / Western Digital Caviar SE 300GB HD / ATA166 IDE Cable / XCM Cystal Clear Case / Red Firework LED 80mm Fan / 12v Fan Mod / UnleashX Default Dash]

Are you using a router or a hub? From your post I guess hub. Does your ISP allow you to have multiple connections to the network? If it does then I would change the straight through cables into crossover cables. If I'm not mistaken you need crossover cables to connect to the network.

as far as im aware, you use patch cables from a hub / switch to any ethernet enabled device, so that shouldnt be a problem.
is the pc connected to the hub in the same way and does it have any problems connecting to the internet?
Im wondering if it is a case of using the same port.
the xbox supports uPNP protocol, meaning on enabled devices it can automatically reconfigure firewalls and port forwarding rules. If both are doing this then one xbox might be stealing the xbox live port so that the other can not use it
have you tried connecting both boxes up but only powering one up to see if they can both connect individually?
without knowing more details it is difficult to offer specific advice, however you may want to try the following:
1) give each xbox a unique static ip, in the same format as the hub's DHCP assigns eg. 192.168.2.1, 192.168.2.
2) tell both xboxes to use the same gateway, ie. the ip of the hub (192.168.2.0)
3) tell the xboxes to use the dns server of your isp eg. 212.23.8.1 or 212.23.8.6
4) iff possible check the MTU (maximum transmission unit) for the hub, if it is too low a connection to live is impossible, but as you need a connection for two xboxes, this may need to be larger.
5) remove any unknown port forwards from the hub settings, and disable uPNP if possible
if the above still produces a no-go, try setting up a "port trigger" for the same port as the one live uses, this will punch a hole in the firewall and temorerily forward it to the relevent xbox, but unlike forwards it is not fixed to one destination.
hope this solves your problem
good luck,
