I looked at the connect tutorial still have a question. Do I have to be connect to the internet to do the ftp? I plan to use my laptop that has a wireless and nic.
Also I plan to install new hdd and chip same day. Do I need to transfer any info from my old drive first other than saves, or can I just install the new drive? _________________ [/b]XBOX v1.? (4 or 5)[/b]:

You don't need to be connected to the internet to FTP. You don't even need a router if you have a crossover cable. The IP address can be static or dynamic if you go through your router. Go with dynamic.... I have a friend that could not FTP through his router if he used static. I use both static and dynamic (depending on my app) and I have the same setup as you. (laptop wireless).
As far as new HDD, install the chip first and do the following
....go to system utils and click on backup. This will create a backup of some important info that you may or may not need. It will be stored in your C drive under the backup folder. Next, make a complete backup of your C and E drives onto your Laptop through your FTP program.
When you install and format the new HDD, restore the C and E drive backup from your laptop.
Make sure you use a BIOS and a chip that can support HDD swap. Go with a Bios that supports +137 GB.

heres another tip..
When you upgrade your hard drive just keep your old XBOX HD in a safe place.. I have done this just in case my 80gb DRIVE dies..
Then i will always rollback to the original 6gb drive.. Some people format the old xbox HD for use in their pc but seriuosly couldnt see why you would bother for such a small amount of diskspace..

when you setup your network make sure you restart the xbox so it is given the IP by the PC. I Spent a whole hour trying to figure out why i couldnt connect to the xbox with Flash FXP
Then i went to me xbox and there was no IP
So always have you PC booted before booting the xbox when you want to FTP

Yet another small tip...
(I've made this mistake a couple of times myself, hehehe)
If you're like me, you would drag a 10 meter (roughly around 30 feet) CAT 5 cable from one central location (your PC) to multiple areas in the house (Lounge Room, Bedroom). Oibvously you won't leave the cable connected as it just gets in the way.
I've noticed to get the network up and running first go every go, make sure the xbox is off before plugging in the network cable. It must be something with the boot sequence of the Xbox that detects a cable in itself and sets up the network.
BTW, I use a Static IP setup here. I just aquired an ADSL Router Modem with 4-Port 10/100 Switch and will probably continue to use Static, even though this nice new piece of equipment does have a built-in DHCP Server. Here's some reasons why:
1) I like the idea that the IP is set, coz if you have to allow access/permissions through a firewall you can just easily type the IP of the Xbox into the firewall.
2) Unless you have a huge network, DHCP (Dynamic IP) is not needed. A common user would only have their PC and Xbox, so just use 192.168.0.1 for the PC, and 192.168.0.2 for the Xbox. Nice and simple.
3) When you FTP to your Xbox, you know exactly what IP you need to access. If you use Dynamic you always have to check what IP the DHCP Server has given out to the Xbox.
Anyways I hope this little bit of info is to some use to someone...
