What are the advantages of a Modchip over a softmod? Are there any mods that can be applied to a modchipped box that cannot be applied to a softmodded one?

2 differences:
1. with a modchip you can have lcd support.
2. you can turn off the chip and play on Xbox Live. (i heard its possible to put a switch into a TSOP flash but i have not read into it to even see what their talking about) you can still play on Live with a softmod but you have to delete everything and re-install the M$ dash and hope you didn't miss anything

Well, a softmod reallly isnt that bad. I play on live with my softmod. I also play on live with my chipped box too lol. If you want to get really into modding and have the money, get a chip! However, if you want to just try out modding with roms and emus and stuff or for your friends, use a softmod. The softmod auto installer on our site is quite possibly the nicest one out there. I has the option to create both a mod and M$ backup so you can switch back anf forth to play on live or not. But it doesnt matter how you do it, either way you modding is awesome !! _________________ Blue Chaos

All modding has its advantages and disadvantages. I still believe that a mod chip is the way to go, but that's not to take away from the effectiveness of other mods. Howerver, if you try a soft mod and screw up a file, your power goes out while doing something, who knows, then you are kinda screwed and have to install a chip anyway...lol
I have played around with some TSOP flashing (Thanks soarer..lol) but have nto played around with softmodding as I just dont have the time. I just really prefer the chip mainly because it has treated me well and seems extremely stable.

Softmodding is really not that different from chippin. I personally like softmodding a little better just cause that is how i got started on modding. Once you learn what and how you are softmodding ... its basically the same as a chip!!! lol sorry just argueing for my favored side here. Because I only got my spider chip to help with modding friend's boxes and learning with all the chip modding stuff with xbox-hq. GO SOFTMODDING!!! wOOp wOOp _________________ Blue Chaos

I have to agree with MG on this, I have done a few softmods and they went fine but I much rather have a chip.
I don't like depending on software too much, but if you just wanna have a play around or you can't solder then perhaps softmodding is for you.
If you mess it up tho then your going to need a chip anyway. Plus if you want to go into the whole modding thing deeper and play with different bios's etc, then a chip is the way to go.
To do a softmod you still need to buy a game & an action replay/Mega X-key/USB pen drive (need adaptation) and for the price of those you can buy a Duox2 or aladdin chip.
Duox2 allows you to disable live, has 2 bios banks etc, no need for an expensive chip unless you want LCD. You don't even need an expensive chip to use debug bios's anymore as you can get them in 512KB or 256KB now.
I really don't know why people spend out on expensive chips (im not complaining mind you as i sell them), they install the same, your just paying for an OS and a few more bios banks, you can even do an eeprom restore with the cheaper chips now and you just flash it via AID if you ever need to.
But if you can't solder or have a 1.6 & can't solder then a softmod is good. But i dunno I like to know I got a noce little chip inside chugging away.
Funky you can't complain as you got a nice chip on it's way

Well I already have one of the games for the softmod, and got a USB -> XBOX adaptor free with my payback points on Lik-sang.
What does the LCD screen display? And what advantages are there to the different BIOS that you can have?
I've been using XBC and XLink Kai for online play anyhoo, is Live that much better?
