No. You just can't plug in the new hd.
The easy way:
Go to the download section of this site. Search for a file called xboxhdm version 1.9. Download it. Connect your computer to your xbox, copy all the files from your xbox hard drive into your computers drive. Now open the xboxhdm and read the tutorial (it is very well written and easy to follow). In no time you will have your hard disc ready.
If you run into any problems you can pm and I will help you get all set.

Normally companies don't care if you open the case, the warranty is on the parts, if you ever call and try to take advantage of the warranty you will probably end up talking to someone overseas, in either the middle east or asia-pacific, they will just tell you what to do, and if it doesn't fix it, send you new parts. That's how most of the time it works anyways. _________________

does this involve hooking up your xbox hdd to the pc? i thought the process was to softmod the xbox, then ftp a copy of the hdd offa the xbox onto the pc. put new hdd in xbox and...hmm guess thats the part eh? you have to copy the files onto the new hdd by actually hooking it up to the pc cuz your xbox won't boot this "clean" hdd?
well, i have to say then, don't be scared of your pc, its not as easy to screw up your pc as you think.

Sadly enough it wiill have to be by hooking the hard drive to the main hdrive cable on your pc as the linux version used in the xboxhdm is already programmed to look for the hard drive on that specific place. THe formating program automatically formats that specific location.
If your pc has one of those stickers that tie in the case and the frame you can always use a hair dryer to heat the sticker glue and then remove it without breaking or altering it. It takes a little patience but can be done.
Anyway an easy way to do it would be if you have a friend with a modded xbox, you can get him to format your hd with his box and then install it on yours.
PS.
PC warranties in my experience are the most over rated thing, I had a Compaq a few years ago for which I paid a lot in warranty coverage. Then when it broke down what failed was the power supply and it took them about a month and a half to fix it (If I changed it myself it would have taken just a few bucks to replace it and compared to the amount I paid for the warranty, I would still have money to buy a new ps2 and xbox)
After that experience, I decided to build my own pc and so far haven't regret it (got good specs for half the price) _________________ 2 Xbox V 1.0
