First step is to make sure you have an exploitable game, this needs to be the original release, not any type of "game of the year" or "platinum hits" version, as these have been fixed so that you can no tdo all the fun stuff with them. There are currecntly 3 games that are available to use to softmod an xbox: Mechassault, 007: Agent Under Fire, and also Splinter Cell, the last was a big suprise to me when I found out it was exploitable.
After you have gotten the game (should be able to find a used copy somewhere for less than $10), you need to be able to copy a game save from your PC to your xbox. The most popular method is to buy an action replay or x-key. These are means of downloading game saves from websites, and then using them in your own games. So either iwill work fine. There are a few more methods, one is modifying the controller cable to have a usb end, then plugging it into the pc, the other method involves using a flash drive formatted with the fatx file system, and also a xbox to usb converter. The last method involves having access to an already modded box, and then uploading the game saves via ftp, then copying them to a memory card.
After you get the save to the memory card, you then just have to copy over the game save like a normal save game. Then launch the game, and select the game save you just loaded, and it should start up the installer for ltools. This is assuming you use the files located in the exploits section of the regular downloads.
After loading everything, you will need to know if you have a 1.6 version xbox or not, if you have a 1.6 you will need to use the evox m8 bios included, otherwise it seems better to use the x2 4981 bios. Also the installer comes default with MXM dashboard, there is an additional game save file located in the exploit download section that adds evox, unleashx, and also avalaunch to the selectable dashboards. I suggest using this also.

I downloaded the gamesaves for installing linux and I have them on my memory card. I have the install linux save, the emergency linux save, and the restore dashboard save. What in detail do I do? I mean I put the game in then load up the save and it automatically goes into this menu instalation thing right? Then I choose EvoX m8 right? I mean I have no idea what to do, and I don't want to just do it cuz I know I can really mess up my XBOX. So would somebody please post a very detailed tutorial for it. Cuz I don't know wtf I'm doing.

Before you go any further stop and backup your xbox HD if you don't know how ask around! I hear too many messed up softmod experiences! I've been softmoding since the first day the softmod was born, sure didn't join any groups but I tried almost every type of softmoding available and have the pros and cons on each. If I can't figure it out then I continue on to the next one why? Because if I can't figure it out then either 1)I don't have all the files that I need to make it softmodded 2)Wrong dashboard version 3)Didn't have the patience after trying almost every resorce that I have and just quit and went to the next hack. Even the one I got to work there was lots but many many of them were CRAP! How many bert and ernie version was out there? If you can ftp to the xbox (using the gamesave hack from loading the game) then contact me. I softmodded all version of xbox out there and I have all the files in the Ultimate Softmod ready pack (it works) in the VIP section but isn't up yet. I just contacted the admin on via email. Ugrading to vip is cheap there's all the files you want in the vip section. If your too cheap then I'll help on what I can but please post it on what to do because I'm so sick and tired of answering on this subject (I helped in another xbox modding group) If you already started on the softmod before I help you and then you messed up, tough luck for you. Your impations got you into this so good luck getting out of the situation.
Oh and gamemodguy, until you actually got to be a member sorry no help for you. Why because I seen so many hit and runs with guest status and never helps people later and when they eventually came back they're so out of touch on the recient update on softmod and tells a different noobie and somehow breakes his xbox. So unless your ready to join "the community" and by that means (for softmodders) you're ready to test out the newest released softmod hack (assuming that they actually improved something if not then don't bother) and try it on different version of xbox that is out there so you can varify that it works for the future softmoders.
Sorry if that sounds cold but not many people are giving back to the softmod comunity then they get out of it. The modchip people can't test for the softmodder so they can't help you in certain areas. Most people have modchips and if a softmodder ask a question the people who have modchip answers asuming that YOU have a chip installed too. They'll answer and softmoders does it and *Boom* your xbox is a paperweight! Then you'll go on and asking what happened and the people that gave you the answer (not knowing the severity on the effect on softmod) will all tell you to get a mod chip! I have 2 HD 1 4 xbox live and 1 4 to play backups,emus. It's pain in the ass but I don't feel like upgrading modchips (Bios flash) on every dashboard updates. Even if the modchip has the off switch everytime M$ upgrades you get band on XBL. I forgot what the point was oh well.
Note: I just got Steel Batalion so I'm going to be busy with that but I'll make sure to check in once in awhile to check on whats up.

well first off I'm not a newbie. I've been in the hacking commodity for years now, I grew up with it. I am just not familiar with the XBOX Version 1.6 and if you think that I'm going to pay for a vip ticket just to hear people like you cut down on others asking a simple question and automatically acusing them of being impatient and ignorant then you can go f#&@ yourself. Sorry if that sounds cold, but I'm a busy guy.

hey mod guy, i'd just like to advise whatever you do through softmodding, do it carefully.i think chpped mods are alot safer from my experience.the hardware sorta gives you more room for error and recovery.ive done both, suceeded with the xenium ice chip, failed with the soft mod, check my posts.i know this is probably more reinforcement then advise, but i just fucked shit up, so i'm fresh proof of a good idea gone bad, lol.what i heard, is the "fonts hack" is not a good method.if you don't know what that is, find out and avoid it, also before you install xbmc, i would ask about it first from some llegitimate soft modders.even if you have it on an auto installer, skip it.that and the xbmp, i auto installed it, and believe thats in part why i'm assed out now.hope i offered substance from my mistakes, good luck!

thanx for the advice. I had gotten several responses telling me of the different saves and different hacks that tended to work and not work. Softmodding is tricky and very risky, but its got to be done right. But I've done my homework and several tutorials I have read have told me what I needed to know, but I thank you for your advice, cuz with softmodding its always needed. lol

I'm down to a choice. I downloaded the mechassault exploit to run linux from xbins by following this tuturial: http://www.how2xbox.com/xbins.htm and I downloaded the install linux, emergency linux, and restore dashboard exploits from this site: http://www.xbox-linux.org/Download Which one(s) should I use? Which seems to be the safer bet, and if I choose to use the 3 saves how exactly would I use them? Just load up the save that does the specific function I want it to execute?
