Post subject: original bios flash only possible with 007 etc. tricks ?

Hello, did a lot of reading of tutorials and think my conclusion below is right. (if so i can stop searching Smile

Replacing the original bios of an Xbox (me and my friend have a version 1.0 and a 1.4) is only possible using tricks like with the 007 game and hooking up harddisks onto a pc wich is running the special linux programs.

Personaly i had the idea that it should also be possible by just burning a DVD wich boots and then run a program to overwrite the bios. (basicaly the same as we do with normal computer) Apperantly my idea is wrong ? A program loaded on a DVD like Flashbios v3 will not do the trick ? Or Slayers or any of the other auto install disk ?

If i do it (well, then i will let somebody do it for me for a few euro's because i don't have the game and memorycard and stuf anyway) if i get a replacement bios installed (so not a mod chip) will it after that replacement be possible to update the bios ? I believe it will be using disks like Slayer etc. but i would just like some confirmation Smile

It's just that up till now TSOP flashing (i believe that's the right term) does not sound as easy as it is with computers so i would rather let an experience guy (or girl Smile do it so chances of succes will be higher and i don't mess anything up Smile

Thanks in advance, just looking for some confirmation here and, if someone can point me to the easiest tutorial on flashing my original bios wich is not flashed yet i would apreciate it. My guess is i will find the same things again (box needs to be "modded" allready or i need to use the 007 etc. stuf) but atleast at that moment i am 100% sure what i need to do.

just 99% sure now and still having some hope it can all be done easier Smile

Thanks in advance,

greetings

Personally I don't like a TSOP flash, I prefer using font exploits and files such as phoenix boot loader. You can use a tool called Ltools, this will autoinstall everything you need to softmod your xbox. A TSOP flash, from what I can tell, requires you to open your box and solder some points, then you will be able to flash it. via a gamesave hack.

Like I said, I much rather do it all with software, and not worry about messing up the onboard bios, how pbl works, it uses a bios made to run off the hard drive, and patches the bios in memory.

Softmod actualy was my first choice before i found that i needed other original softs and do some tricks with the harddisk. I noticed in my first posting that i mixed up TSOP and softmod. So flahing needs me to solder to. Then softmod sounds a lot better Smile

My problem is that i also want to upgrade the HD and that seems to be tricky because then i need to do some dangerous stuf with the HD.

Softmod actualy is my prefered choice because all i want to do is make a nice media center out of the Xbox but i just want as little as possible chance of messing anything up.

Thanks for the hint on Ltools. Will do some searching for that. Maybe that will be an "easy" way wich i dare to take Smile

Guess i have it all sorted out now in my head... please correct me when i am wrong.

TSOP - soldering inside xbox needed. Original bios will be replaced. Not possible to put it back in original state.

Softmod - Original game and action replay hardware needed. Once you have that it's fairly easy but, that hardware is more expensive than getting just 1 modchip. Box can (easily) be put back to original state. No opening of the box is needed.

modchip - soldering needed. Not possible to put in original state but as far as i understand, very flexible because you can use different bios'es etc. (i would just use one but this might be intresting for others)

So if i just want to do 1 or 2 mod's i guess it's cheaper to do a modchip (they go for 15 euro allready for the aladdins) If i want to do more than.. lets say 5, softmod is the way to go. Nobody seems to reccomend TSOP but it seems to be the cheapest way to go allthough not so easy because you also need to solder.

I guess, since i don't have the hardware (memory unit and game) and will not need that in the future (not planning on playing a lot of games if any) the soldering of the chip is probably my way to go.

Again, please correct me if i am wrong somewhere in my assumptions Smile

thanks in advance !

For a little bit more you should be able to buy a solderless chip, and if you have a new xbox, a lpc rebuild kit, and would only have min. soldering required. As far as I can tell, everything can be put back to original state:

TSOP: Flash with original kernel.

Softmod: Remove hacked files, and replace with a backup which should be done before doing anything, no matter what choice you make.

Modchip: Restore the backup you made, then remove the chip.

You will void your warranty if you put in a larger hard drive, so this shouldn't be a worry to you. Honestly the easiest and most supported way is a mod chip, but I will be here if you choose to go the route of a softmod.

You don't neccessarily have to have an Action Replay, but it really makes the process easier, the other solution would be converting the controller connector to usb, then using some drivers, I would need to locate these for you, but it shouldn't be that big of a problem, then attaching a mem card to the controller. But this will really run you close to the same amount if you don't have a mem card already. Also you will need one of 3 games, not just 007, but you can use Splinter Cell, or MechAssualt also. Here in the states I can buy any of those 3 games for less than $10 USD, but I'm not sure about the pricing where you are located. I can also buy a used memory card for ~$20, and I have tons of usb cables laying around to try this, but I got into the scene a bit late, and had already purchaced MechAssualt, and an Action Replay, so I was out nothing extra.

you can restore Tsop Flashed and Modchiped xbox back to the oryginal

but the warranty will be lost either way ,

you have to solder 2 points on the motherboard to be able to flash
the tsop ,

You can flash tsops with some autoinstallers like the new deluxe installer , but you can only run the installer if your bios is allready flashed or the box is softmodded otherwise the use of game exploits
is necessery

I will dive into the softmod more deeply tomorrow. Have been looking around how it should be done and it looks like i should be able to do it Smile Would not want to do it the realy hard way with building the cables myself, allthough it should not be to difficult, but i don't have any memorycards anyway so the action replay sounds like the "smartest" way to do it.

I actualy am planning to do 2 xboxes. My own and, if all goes well, one of a friend of mine (i have a 1.4 he has a 1.0). The softmod sounds to me like an intruiging way to do it and probably just as expensive as getting two chips. This way i will atleast be able to help someone in the future if anyone of my friends gets an xbox Smile

Thanks so far, i will let you know what i will do and how it worked out.

greetings

Yes, excuse me, that was what i ment whith "getting it back to original". The waranty will be gone with two of the three options.

Since i will have no waranty anyway and my friends box is also old, waranty is not realy an issue for me. (it might be for others who have to make the same desision i have to make now)

Allthough thinking about the last.. warranty is only important if the box breaks down... if it does you probably won't be able to get it back to original anyway because you can not undo the softmod...

thanks

Well, let me say thank you very much !

Went for the softmod, bought an action replay (was the easiest for me to get) and must say, all went more easy than i expected. The tutorial i had was for the Mech Assault game so that was a little different than the 007 i actualy bought but it was self explanating enough to get through the process. Advice to anyone that tries this in the future, make sure you have all the steps you want to perform on paper so you know what to do next after each step. I did not have it and at some point just did some stuf trying to install some programs and am sure i have a messy HDD now Laughing Basicaly with this i mean the process AFTER the mod.

I did not install my new HDD yet. I installed it in another computer i have here in my network. Now all computers can acces it without the XBox having to be on all the time. Because the box is still a little noisy i prefer it only being on when i use it.

So thanks for the help and i can reccomend a softmod to anyone. No idea why people would want it any other way Very Happy

Greetings
