OK, first off, I'll admit I'm just barely smart enough to do really stupid things to my XBOX. I had wanted to change my softmod from evox to unleashx and deleted a bunch of stuff from the C drive to make it choose the unleashx xbe file. I did make copies of everything locally on my machine and thought I'd just FTP them back if things went wrong but now I can't connect via FTP anymore.
It turns out I deleted too much stuff and now when I boot it goes to a Xbox live screen where the three options of 'Account Management', 'New Account' and 'Network Setup' all do nothing at all. If there is a game in the tray, it will load fine and the game saves and everything is good there so this bad situation could be worse.
I've tried a variety of burned DVD's that used to work including the Hexen 2018 but none of them do anything other than flash the screen white for a second.
I'm looking for any clever ideas on what to try to get the system working properly again. My next thought was to pull the hard drive out and try to put the backed up files on directly but I'd rather not do that as I haven't cracked the case open yet and would prefer not to break the seals.
I did see this post (too late) from ArchAngle saying not to edit the C drive unless you know what you're doing - clearly I don't and shouldn't have been...
Thank you for helping a true noob!

The only way I see to fix it is to crack open the case to gain access to the hard drive. Physically remove it and connect it to a PC. However, the Xbox hard drive is locked with a unique password that is computed by only that Xbox. There's a unique HDDKey value stored in the configuration EEPROM which along with the hard drive's model and serial number are used each time the Xbox boots to compute the unlocking password to gain access to the hard drive's content.
which brand/model hard drive is it?
Do you have a backup copy of the eeprom.bin file?

I don't believe I copied the eeprom.bin file across, the files that I deleted and backed up from the c drive were:
You can recover but the process is not a simple one.

The simplest method to recover is to install a modchip, boot an installer disc such as Hexen 2018, FTP the files back to the console that you deleted, power off the console, remove the modchip then boot the console using the softmod once again.

Thanks, I think that's a good suggestion - any recommendation on a basic modchip for someone that hasn't done it before?

OpenXenium or Aladdin XT plus 2 clone (aka XT 4032).
The OpenXenium has a lot more features than the Aladdin modchip.

I was ready to do a hardware mod with the aladdin chip but I thought I'd give something simpler a shot. I found a copy of Splinter Cell and found the xbox harddrive still had a copy of the exploit on it so running that took me right back into the modified evolutionx menu where I was able to backup the eeprom, restore the c drive and even change the configuration to unleashx so I'm all set!

You were damned lucky the Xbox could still boot any discs and of course lucky too you still had the softmod exploits available. But glad to read you fixed it so relatively easily.
BTW FYI never touch the C:\ drive unless you know what you're doing.
Looking at the content you removed from C:\ you used SID/AID for the original softmod so your dashboard XBE (evoxdash.xbe) was on E:\ not C:\ anyway. That C:\xb1xdash.xbe was actually your renamed MS dash.
How a disc still booted without what looks like the whole of the C:\ content deleted I have no idea. Did you use the Shadow C /Virtual eeprom install option for the original softmod?
All you actually needed to do to swap to UnleashX would have been to replace the "E:\evoxdash.xbe" ie. your dashboard XBE with an UnleashX one renamed to precisely the same name.
Effectively that is what you did by running the softmod installer again. If you'd used the SID dual boot option Dash/Softmod you could have done that without the luck or hassle involved in the route you took.

I didn't do the original softmod so I'm not sure what was done there. I understand how lucky I was that this all worked and learned my lesson not to tweak stuff on the c drive anymore (especially without backups of everything!) Lots of lessons were learned, thanks for the guidance!
