I've had experience with almost all the Xbox fitted disc drives including both the Samsungs.

This week I bought a used Xbox v1.4 with a 605B which was sold as having a faulty disc drive. My guess it was just the normal tray eject/close issue usually, but not always, resolved by replacing the drive belt.

That is exactly what it had and indeed I fixed it quite easily with a new belt. However when I came to test the disc drive with an original game disc it refused to read it. You can hear the laser drive working and it spins up temporarily but then stops and tries again.

The normal explanation for this is a dirty laser lens but when I took it apart (it is a genuine virgin Xbox ie. never been opened or modded) I found the lens was not dirty in fact the disc drive and the whole of the inside of the rest of the Xbox is exceptionally clean for a 2003 model. Only the extractor cooling fan shows significant dust build up.

Yet this evidence that it has been well looked after, little used and kept somewhere clean in storage makes the disc drive problem if anything more mysterious.

The laser carriage is not sticking, the laser itself appears to be working, the drive motor too, everything is clean but it still refuses to read any discs. Spins up for a short time (5secs) then stops and repeats as described.

I'd love to get it fixed but I'm out of ideas unless this sort of behaviour indicates a laser power fault which might be fixed by a pot. tweak. Is that consistent with the evidence?

If you've checked and everything seems to be functioning, it could just be a case of media. I know you already probably know this, but just throwing it out there mate.

Xbox CD/DVD Compatibility Database
Browse through a list of compatible CD & DVD media for the "Xbox" or submit your own..

EDIT: In the old days I used to always pot tweak most of my drives. The Samsung were always really nice for me.

I had nothing but problems trying to get most of my original drives reading CDR/CDRW.. Pot tweaking just increased the sensitivity of the laser.

Its definitely the drive not the media. I have a large number of Xbox discs on a variety of disc media and all I tried produced the same result. Same applies to original games' disc too.

Annoyingly my spare disc drive, a Philips, is mechanically perfect so I assumed it was all good. But I found out today that whilst it reads original Xbox discs perfectly I could only get one newly burned HeXEn 2017 DVD-R to even spin up. It hates all my burned discs on every media which still work perfectly on other Xboxes including another Philips drive.

I actually softmodded the Xbox with this disc dive and SC having no idea there was any problem.

A disc drive problem is a deal breaker because my intention is to TSOP this Xbox and I'm thankful I tested the HeXEn 2017 disc before getting to the point of trying use it. I even tried copying the HexIns* folder on the disc to the HDD and it simply failed at some point multiple times.

I subbed in a known working HDD (Samsung) from another Xbox but it looks now as if I have two different Xbox disc drives that need a pot tweak. No guarantee that will even work.

*About the HexIns installed version - has anyone here actually used it for the TSOP BIOS flashing rather than from a HeXEn disc as most of the tutorials show?
