I have two xbox's ones a V1.2 the other a V1.4 is there such a thing as a best version for modchips? I have an AMD Duo X2 GS if it helps to answer this question, or is there a better video chip on one version than the other versions like using an Xcalibur or Conexant or Focus etc. _________________ Xbox Halo Green Limited Edition v1.4

A modchip will work in any version. A 1.6 requires a BIOS for that version of the console but 1.0-1.5 use the same BIOS. A 1.6 console also requires an LPC rebuild as MS removed many of the signals from the LPC debug port required for it to work.
Xcalibur is only on a 1.6 console and some games don't startup correctly. The video is scrambled when high def AV pack modes are in use. There are scripts available to use with XBMC to patch many but not all the games that exhibit this problem.

Yes I found when the modchip was in a V1.6 I got scrambled graphics but not with games (I didnt try any on it) instead for a program I dont remember what it was but basically kaos_engr your saying stay away from Xcalibur ok no problem I dont have any V1.6 xbox's now anyway as the one I had with the modchip in I forgot to backup the Eeprom and I broke a track on the LPC so I cant rechip it. _________________ Xbox Halo Green Limited Edition v1.4

My v1.4 is my least favourite Xbox. It also has a Philips disc drive, the least compatible disc drive version. That disc drive is unreliable and inconsistent too, probably due to age/previous owner's abuse so I won't condemn it outright.
The v1.4 s the only Xbox I have with the Focus video encoder and it is the only Xbox I own which requires significantly different TV colour/contrast/brightness settings to match any of my other Xbox (Contexant and Xcalibur) display characteristics.
It also shifts the whole image on screen slightly right at the default settings, again unlike any of the others on the same TV and cable type.
My preference is for any Contexant fitted Xbox with a Hitachi disc drive. The Hitachi does not like most CD media (oddly it is OK with CD-RW) but it reads everything else. Of the two I own neither have had disc tray eject/close problems unlike, the Philips and now all my Samsungs disc drive fitted Xboxes, both 605B and 605F.

I will get around to TSOPing one day but for now the chipped way seems to have on par capabilities with TSOP but my chip has 512kb banks and at the moment I dont know what the BIOS chip on an xbox is for TSOP (512/128/64 etc.) so I will get my chipped xbox running first, is there any noticeable speed benefits of a chipped vs TSOP? _________________ Xbox Halo Green Limited Edition v1.4

The shift on the v1.4 is only with RGB SCART cables which do have an issue with certain TVs which do not have built in RGB SCART correction. But no other Xbox version used with the same TV and RGB SCART cable behaves like that. That's why I guess it is something to do with the Focus video encoder.
The other picture settings display issues mentioned are more noticeable when using RGB SCART too, much less so with Component. Except in direct comparison you probably wouldn't notice it when using Component. I only did when I was testing Xbox disc drive compatibility a few years ago and swapping the same RGB SCART set up between eight different Xboxes.
BTW I may have mentioned this before here but the Hitachi disc drive is the only disc drive I've found that has issue with a particular game when played from disc. It causes a sound fault. If it wasn't for the fact I have two Hitachi drives and they both cause the same problem with the same game I probably would not have discovered that either.
