Hi Guys,

First of all, thank you very much for the makers of this site, I'm from Hungary, but our Xbox related modding site is down unfortunately, so, thank you very much for keeping this site alive!

I have a fully n00b, some of you may call it silly, question.
I'm a proud owner of all the Xboxes, love them.
Actually, the 360 is used now by my son, I still have the One under the telly, besides a PS4 (argh), but I kept all these years my old PS2 and my old XBox original.
Both of these are chipped, but they don't really work, obviously, they need some maintenance.
I've already ordered a new wireless pad, HDMI converter and replacement laser for the PS, so it will resurrect soon.
But, the XBox, well, it is a bit more tricky.
First of all, I have 3 joy pads, non of them works, you know, that crazy cable error, there must be a disruption / continuity error somewhere.
My plan is that I'll order a PS2 to Xbox joy converter and I'll use the PSs wireless joy. I'm still shocked, how expensive is a wireless original XBox joy, crazy!

So.

Another problem with this unit is the condition of the HDD.
Not really bad, but, it is relatively small, 80GB, and very old.
I'd like to replace it.

As I mentioned, it is chipped, but I don't like playing from disc, I'd like to re-install the games into my HDD.

I've already downloaded all the games from a huge torrent pack, it says, they're HDD ready.

Anyway, I have the new IDE drive here and my silly question is that can I prepare the drive, without the unit?
I mean, can I format it, copy the files, games, etc, then, later, just place the drive into the unit and go.

Also, I'm a bit lost in the woods.
As far as I know, I have an EvoX, quite sure it is an old version, but that is all, do not really know anything else, I mean, don't know the bios version, EvoX version, nothing...

So, is that possible, if not, could you please point me to the right direction, where I can read the must have info, just to clear up the mess in my head about what is what, etc., because right now, I know that there are bios versions, dashboards, alternative firmwares, launchers, etc., but what I really need, is a simple interface, just to start the games from the HDD, I really don't need anything else...

Thank you very much in advance fellas'!

Hi encoder and welcome to HQ. Smile

Great to hear that you still have all of your old retro consoles, and like you mentioned, they are certainly fetching some very nice prices.

I dont know of anyway that you could do it on a PC and it will be much easier for you to do it on the Xbox itself.

O.k. - luckily you have a modchip installed in your xbox, so the simplest solution for you will be to download and burn a copy of Auto Installer Deluxe (AID) to a DVD and pop it in your xbox. When you confirm that it boots, power down your xbox, remove the old hdd and replace it with a newer compatible drive.

With the new drive fitted, you just pop AID in the Xbox DVD tray again and boot it up. From there you can format the new hdd, install the default M$ (Microsoft Dashboard) and any other dashboards or emulators you might want to include. Finally, don't forget to locked the hdd.

Auto Installer Deluxe Forum:
https://www.xbox-hq.com/html/forum58.html

Where to Download
AID is available on the XBOX-HQ VIP FTP Servers, VIP downloads area and can probably still be found on torrent and many other sources.

Here is some more info on Auto Installer Deluxe from our homebrew database:
https://www.xbox-hq.com/html/modules.php?name=Xbox_Homebrew&op=view&gid=161&title=Auto+Installer+Deluxe

I hope that helps get you started.

Enjoy the site.

Thank you very much for the help, I was able to hunt down the mentioned latest version of AID, actually, it was a pretty easy google search.
I'll fire up the unit this evening to see what is inside HW/SW-vise.
All I need is a bigger drive, with freshly installed games, just to shoot some bots in Black Very Happy

Ok guys, so, actual state :

- burned AID, final version, deluxe as you suggested
- checked the unit, works fine, even the damn controller came back to life, so I was able to track down the info you asked :

EvolutionX V+3935
BIOS Version : EvoD.6ejct
Kernel Version : 1.00.4817.01
XBox Hardware Iinfo : 00000200 A3 A4

So, this is it.
Actually, the ran into new troubles, so I've re-arranged my plans.
First of all, the HDD is extremly loud, but, it is not slow, and it seems I have more space than I thought, so I'll leave there for now, I'll FTP new games, etc., somehow...
System says I have this many space :

C : 116.441.088
E : 4.135.632.896
F : 8.447.361.024
G : 0
X : 786.300.928
Y : 155.205.632
Z : 261.898.240

Still don't know how big is the HDD and how to FPT the thing. If I can clear the actual games, I'd be good to go for now, later, around summer, I'll replace the thing with a 128GB SSD for sure.

But, the most crazy problem is the image quality.
I'm in Europe, so it is PAL.
I'm using a standard XBOX cable, you know, one end goes to the box, the other is to the TV (SCART)

The image is screamingly DULL, or shaded, or I don't know, but for sure, isn't right.
Tried to capture it, picture attached, as you can see, it is far from sharp, like, faded or I don't know...

Any ideas?

There could be a problem with your A/V adapter cables. Do you have another set of cables to try so we can rule that out?

Yeah, it must be the cable.
Nope, unfortunately, no other set, I'll order a component cable Monday.
Till that I have to stick with this advanced scart thing :S

RGB via SCART is the best you'll get from an interlaced image display which is what you will have if you're using a PAL system. It is either 576i/50Hz or 480i/60Hz - you should always use the latter even though 576i does look marginally sharper.

The first thing to do is check that you're actually using a RGB SCART cable and not the AV Composite cable with SCART adapter PAL Xboxes were supplied with. If you're using an AV Composite cable with SCART adapter it is just a composite display which is the least good picture quality.

Assuming it is a RGB SCART cable make sure it is actually plugged into to a RGB enabled SCART socket in the TV. Many TVs with SCART inputs have one or more RGB sockets and one for Composite/S-Video. RGB > S-Video > AV Composite.

The next thing you should do is dump your EvoX dash board and install UnleashX as your main one if you're not going to use XBMC. UnleashX has many useful video setting options.

Early retail Xbox default settings were lousy for RGB SCART as the flicker filter was set too high and the image softened. Later Xboxes were better but until modded you can't get the best PQ out of them. UnleashX gives you both flicker filter control and yes/no soften options.

Never use soften and my experience suggests the flicker filter should not be set higher than 2. You won't need any when you get the Component cable.

There are also the TV picture settings to consider too, digital processing particularly if you're using any TV manufacturer's pre-set video options, can ruin PQ. Always use custom settings for colour, contrast, brightness, sharpness, hue (NTSC only) and any other image processing controls it has.

Finally, once you get the Component cable you're not going to be able to get the best out of it unless you region change the console to NTSC. The PAL dash retail or modded does not support 480p, 720p or 1080i. You can not swap region without using the Enigmah region changer app which you'll find in AID's selection of Apps.

I would not bother with 1080i, the Xbox simply can not handle it well, the dash navigation will slow down dramatically. Use 720p max and I'd suggest sticking to 480p as that is all the vast majority of Xbox games support.

BTW in case you didn't know most PAL games do support 480p it is just that MS decided not to allow PAL users access to that option by hobbling the PAL dash.

The info provided about the HDD shows that you have about 8GB free space on the F:\drive but, obviously not how big the HDD actually is. Again, by using the UnleashX dash you have a Storage settings System > Settings menu option which will show many things about your HDD including both used and unused space in MB for each drive.

Some UnleashX skins.xmls are set to show used space on the 'home' screen rather than free space too.

If the Xbox is chipped and HDD was upgraded it means the Xbox was opened so if you want to be sure what HDD you have get a Torx screw driver set and check that yourself.

Nice detailed post, thank you very much!
I've tried all the scart ports on our TV, all of them looks the same, the cable I'm using is a genuine MS XBox Advanced Scart cable, where there is this little box between the box and the TV.
Will install it today and we'll see Very Happy
For sure the drive is big, I already have a lot of games + a full CoinOps 5 there, so it must be around 80GB at least.

Hi Guys

Quick update :

- composite cable installed : picture is sharp, my telly says it displays 480, amazing, finally the console is playable
- brand new controller is here as well, still a little stiff, you know, like a brand new will replace it with a wireless one as soon as possible, question about this later
- ftp via crosslink cable on Mac with Filezilla is fast enough right now, dumping aroung 80 gigs of games

About the wireless controller thing.
My first idea was to buy a dedicated wireless controller for this thing, but the price is really really high. Now, plan B is, cheap eBay PS2 wireless controller, with the controller adapter.
Should I save up, look for a cheaper XBox controller, or can I use the PS2 one without problems?

Amazing, everything works fine guys, thank you very much for the help!
.
...one more thing Wink

The controller.
This is clearly a cheap (temporarly for sure) replacement, but the analog sticks are, well, I don’t know, they are too sensitive.
Is this makes any sense?
I barely can aim in fps shooters, even if I turn down the sensitivity all the way...
