So i am having huge trouble with using chimp, and from what I read there is a lot of trouble using chimp on a 1.6. Is there any other alternatives? I cant use Xbox HDM since I dont have a old computer with IDE. I saw tutorials for 1.6 but I am wondering do you have to use a cross over cable since I dont have that. thx

What version of Chimp are you running? I never heard of a problem on 1.6s but i might be wrong, I know timing is everything and make sure if your cloning to have the 2nd hard drive set to slave on the jumper. Now a days you dont need a crossover cable for ftping standard cat 5 will work hooked up to your router ( i prefer crossover but im so use to using it). There is many ways to upgrade the hard drive 1 being chip or if you know someone that has a chipped xbox you can null your main drive on xbox 1 and on xbox 2 (chipped xbox) have the new drive hooked up and get the dash files and everything you want on it and then null that drive, once you do you can put it in xbox 1 and let it do its little setup and then you are done. otherwise you can just get a cheap aladdin chip and install it on 1.6 but then you have to do some soldering and rebuild the lpc board under the mobo like 5 wires if i remember off top my head. but maybe someone else knows a better method for your situation.

With a v1.6 and Chimp you must not and in fact can not use (at least not easily) any version before Chimp 2618. Better than Chimp 2618, you should find Rocky5's most recent update: Chimp 261812 which was done with the approval and support of Chimp 2618's original creator: Idotsfan.

Rocky5's last update did away with almost everything that can cause problems with using Chimp, no more copying of the linuxboot.cfg to the root of the E:\drive, just install Chimp in E:\Apps and it should be good to go.

The most common trouble using Chimp is the swap of the IDE cable from the DVD drive to the new HDD and even this has been made easier in that you you can swap before you launch Chimp or after it is booted.

Before unless you had the timing right you only had a short window to do the swap if Chimp was running. That's why the recommendation was always to do it whilst on the the main dash ie. before Chimp was booted.

I always do that anyway even now and the swap still has to be clean whenever it is done so try not to mess around getting the IDE connector out of the DVD drive and into the HDD.

Other than that the only other source of user problems with Chimp is forgetting to set the new HDD's jumpers to slave before using Chimp and/or forgetting to change it back to master afterwards.

There is the added hassle now of having to use SATA HDDs. These must be used with an SATA/IDE adapter that has master/slave jumper options. An 80 wire IDE cable is also mandatory.

Thx for replying I didn't think anybody would reply this fast. I will try using Chimp 261812. The problem I was talking about was that it wouldn't lock despite it being having locking compatibility. And it wouldn't clone. Chimps says it cloned, and I plugged it to my computer through a ide to usb adapter to lock it from there, and in disk management, it says that its empty. The part needing a crossover cable from this guide for 1.6 https://www.xbox-hq.com/html/postt25592.html&sid=6ffc4f2790a5d72c6acc292a85f8fe8b

The hard drive I am using is a 40GB ST340016A and I am doing it on a soft modded xbox with a modchip.

okay I just did what you said, and I am now very certain that its because it doesn't have locking compatibility. time To buy stuff from ebay!

The reported locked/unlocked status of the slave HDD after it the cloning/locking is something older Chimp versions didn't always get right.

But in general if the HDD is shown as still unlocked or won't boot when swapped to master with an error 5 then it is a genuine HDD locking issue.

It is quite unusual now and with all HDDs I've used with Xboxes (at least a dozen) I've only had one that would not lock: a 20GB (Maxtor?).

Any HDD in 120GB - 160GB range IDE or SATA is likely to be lockable but you can practically guarantee it if it is Seagate or WD. This web site is certainly not comprehensive, particularly with regard to more recent SATA HDDs but still might be useful:-

http://xboxdrives.x-pec.com/

Interestingly there are many reports of the ST340016A being lockable and some even report Chimp worked although not which version. There might also be issue with it because it is a v1.6 Xbox but even then there is one report there Chimp did lock that HDD on a v1.6.

But version changes to anything ie. Xbox, Chimp, or the HDD itself can affect compatibility apparently. I guess you were just unlucky.

BTW you seemed to have your wires crossed about certain other matters :-

1). You either have a modchip or a softmod you can't have both.

2). A cross-over cable is one you'd use for FTPing ie. a CAT5/6/Ethernet cable connecting your PC to the Xbox. If you're connecting via a router then you don't need the cross-over type and with most modern PCs even if you connect them directly a cross-over cable is now not actually required.

3). Using an IDE to USB adapter or a external IDE HDD enclosure with a Xbox HDD will always report the HDD as empty. Windows does not recognise the FATX formatting. You need to use a small program called Xplorer360 for the content to display on a PC.

Even then I've found that a Xbox HDD may not be recognised by Windows as a USB mass storage device. It will just report as a generic USB attachment not listed in My Computer or as a "Storage" volume in Computer Management or Device Manager. In that case even Xplorer360 will not display the contents.

Use Chimp 261812, it prompts you when to swap the IDE connector from the DVD drive to the new IDE HDD or IDE-to-SATA adapter/SATA HDD combo. Once swapped, press (A) to continue. Both the stock and new IDE HDD or IDE-to-SATA adapter and SATA HDD are powered when the console is turned on - a Molex Y-power splitter is required.

Download then upload all five (5) files from the Rocky5's Chimp GitHub repo's E partition folder to the Xbox's E:\Apps\Chimp\ folder. If it does not already exist, create the Chimp folder on the Xbox.

Crossover or NOT!

Most newer computer's Ethernet ports support auto-MDI/MDI-X. Such Ethernet hardware automagically connects the wire pairs to make a connection. No crossover cable necessary!

XboxHDM 1.9 or 2.2a - No IDE Interface - NEITHER

Since most new PCs no longer include an IDE interface, there's a newer version - XboxHDM23USB - that allows the HDD to be connected to the PC with a USB-to-HDD interface adapter - either IDE, SATA or combination with both drive types with an external power supply for 3.5" HDDs.

XboxHDM23USB comes in 2 versions: Beta 2 or Beta 3.

Beta 2 needs a clean set of MS dashboard files for the C drive added to the hdm\C subfolder.

Beta 3 is pre-configured - add NO files - with a no-original-game-disc-required softmod installer for Rocky5's Xbox Softmodding Tool. Simply install the newly built LOCKED HDD in the Xbox, power on the console and follow the onscreen instructions to finish the softmod installation.

With either version, lock the new drive before exiting. To do this step, you'll need a copy of the configuration EEPROM contents from the Xbox motherboard - 256 bytes - either:

  1. Softmod the stock console before building a new larger HDD with a PC. I use Rocky5's Xbox Softmodding Tool and download via FTP the eeprom.bin backup it creates. Xbox-HQ's Babylon 3 GS softmod installer by SPPV works too.

  2. Use an Xbox EEPROM reader/writer connected to a PC's 9-pin serial port and PonyProg software, or

  3. Use a Raspberry Pi with PiPROM software - tutorial Read/Write an Xbox EEPROM with a Raspberry Pi.

Copy the eeprom.bin file to the folder where you extracted XboxHDM23USB to on your PC's HDD. Run xboxhd.bat to start XboxHDM23USB.
