Hi guys,

n00b on this forum, but definitely not new on Xbox and modding. Anyhow, I have a question for ya all, and it would be superb if you could help.

Here is the story:

I've recently bought a limited edition Xbox from the US. I understand the Xbox needs 100W. and has 100-127 V.

Therefore, I also bought a converter/power supply of 200W, set to 110 V (as I'm in Italy). The brand is Bronson.

However, what I've noticed is that the Xbox framerate drops frequently when there are section of the game with many details - which is something that does not happen on my other PAL Xbox. Could this have to do with power consumption? Do I need a higher capacity power supply?

Also, to point out, it is not the disc drive as the disc spins normally.

Any guidance would be highly appreciated Sad

Thank you all,
A. Question

I think it has more to do the video standad PAL vs NTSC or 50 vs 60Hz framerate. A US Xbox can have its video output changed from NTSC to PAL mode. UnleashX dashboard settings page has options to change the video standard. Or, run the EnigmaH video switcher application to change modes.

You need to change the eeprom flag from NTSC to PAL so it will display at proper resolution (576) and refresh rate (50hz 25FPS) as opposed to the NTSC standard of 480, 60Hz and 30FPS. Or else check your TV and see if it has NTSC-PAL settings, if it does switch it to NTSC when using the XBOX.

Enigmah and Ux both do this on a temporary basis using a virtual eeprom and leaving the actual eeprom alone and is the safest route if you are unfamiliar with modifying and replacing the eeprom and recovery in case of issues.

Thanks for your help guys!

I would have thought that framerate drops would be independent from the Hz? What I'm talking about here is, imagine you had a crappy PC and tried to run Crysis - I mean that kind of framerate drops.

Thanks again, I'll give Enigmah a shot!

Its a very similar situation to a high end game running on low end gear. A PAL 50Hz TV will only display 25FPS where as an NTSC XBOX outputs 30FPS so you drop 5 frames or 1/6th of them per second which is very noticeable.

I'd put this down to being more likely the power supply rather than anything to do with a properly functioning the Xbox.

If this does not happen with the PAL Xbox, otherwise identically modded and connected to the same TV and playing the same games then only thing that is different is the power supply and that has to be the prime suspect.

At at 200W it should be OK with the Xbox which it is stated draws 'up to' 100W but is the 240v > 110V transformer actually delivering that power consistently?

However first I'd look at the back of the Xbox where you plug in the figure 8 power cable. It should have a label to the left of the socket which says 110V - 120V 60Hz or something like that. I've never actually seen a US Xbox but I'd assume it is labelled in the same way as UK/EU ones.

If the label says 220v - 240v 50Hz then whatever you've bought might not be a US console.

In circumstances like this, particularly if the label is missing or the Xbox case has clearly been opened, then I would be checking the actual power board just to make sure it is what it is supposed to be.

If it is all 110V/120V then, unless the Xbox itself is faulty, I'd be suspicious about the supposedly 200W step-down transformer you're using.

Cheap-ish uncertified PSUs often operate at up to 10% below their stated rating. I've checked the stats for it and with continuous use (30 mins!!???) the Bronson is only meant for equipment drawing 120W or less.

The Bronson may have some sort of built in overheating protection because of this.

If I was a gambling person I'd put money on the Bronson for whatever reason ie. faulty or inherently under-specified for this particular use as the cause of the problem described.

All my Xboxes are originally PAL (UK) but once you soft or hard mod them one of the main reasons to do that is so you can use 480p/60Hz rather than 480i/60Hz (PAL60) or 576i/50Hz (PAL50 ie. standard PAL).

By far the majority of PAL version Xbox games support NTSC so even if the game will only display in 480i/60Hz there is very little reason ever to go back to using the PAL dashboard which only allows PAL50/60 video options.

There should be no unique to region frame rate drop if you're using PAL60 or NTSC therefore whatever the console region if you're getting noticeable frame rate problems there has to be some other factor involved.

LMFAO you cant compare running a PAL console modded on a PAL TV to an NTSC console modded on a PAL TV. Its an apples to oranges comparison

I've never read of a problem like the one described being attributed to regional issues.

I've used natively PAL/NTSC only versions and genuine region free games both nominally NTSC or PAL and never had such a problem.

They were all being played on softmodded or a chipped PAL Xboxes region swapped to NTSC, for the reason stated, but I've also test played many of them on consoles region swapped back to PAL. Again no similar problems.

As indicated I am using a PAL TV and whilst there have always been a few UK TVs which only supported PAL50/PAL60 the majority do support NTSC 4.43 (pretty much identical to PAL60) from external inputs. That has been true for at least the last 30 years, in fact I've never owned a UK TV that didn't support NTSC 4.43.

But in cases where that was the problem the game either does not display at all or just in b/w and/or with frame rolling. That is not what is happening here.

I agree there may be problems encountered specific to using a natively NSTC Xbox on a specific TV. I do not know from my own experience so I can not speak with any authority on that matter.

However it just seemed to me common sense to consider first the most likely source of the problem described is the most obvious difference between the two systems: the power supply transformer being used.
