Hope someone can help as I`ve read lots of tutorials and tried allsorts but with no success so far Sad

I have a Windows XP Pro SP2 PC connected to the xbox via a Via compatible Ethernet LAN adapter to the xbox adpator via a standard connecting lead.

However I just cannot get either the pc or the xbox to recognise each other. I have set the IP address and so on for the xbox and the pc but neither is seeing the other.

Windows tells me a network connection is unplugged but it isn`t, both ends are plugged in and I am genuinely puzzled as to why it won`t work.

On the dash the system settings page says there is no link, I have told it to setup network and use static ip. Enable FTP is enabled on the xbox and should be working - but isn`t.

if you are using a direct connection instead of going through a router you need twisted pair cable

Duh, I am so stupid sometimes! I checked the end of the cable and you are correct, it is a 4 pin not eight pin connection so is a telephone standard and not ethernet Embarassed

I`d never have twigged it if you hadn`t mentioned the crossover and I googled to see what the types of ethernet and rj-45 connectors were.

Thanks.

Dave

You need a crossover cable, take both ends and look at them so you can see what colour wire goes to what terminal, hold them side my side. If they are identical then you have the wrong cable. they must not be in the same order if you get what I mean

Got it, there is a specialist computer shop near me which has a lead and an adaptor that converts the lead they have to a crossover so will get that.

Thanks Smile

there are tutorials on how to change a regualr cable to a cross over, then you wouldn't have to buy any adaptors or anything

Got the cable, had a few teething problems but found the solution and now works great.

When my pc is on and I don`t want to ftp to the xbox I undplug the lead as I have heard that the xbox can access the broadband modem of your pc and don`t know whether that is true or not.
Does leaving it in compromise the xbox at all?

Thanks.

Dave

To save wear and tear of unplugging your cable, just left click on the the connection in network properties and select disable or enable to turn it on and off. Eventually the holding tab will break off or a pin will get bent. I havent heard of an xbox going out to the net and downloading kiddie pawn or sending crap jokes to everyone in your address books. Your PC is probably more dangerous on the cable modem. But, you'll do no harm in disconnecting the xbox from the net.

I didn`t think the xbox would connect but that if someone scanned the pc they could also scan the xbox connected and don`t want any viruses, although I have a firewall and antivirus and ip blocker so should be safe.

I thought of simply clicking the connection off but windows doesn`t let me, always says connection is in use even when not so is only other option really and I don`t ftp much.

Just being overly cautious.

The problem is that today's virus product are reactive...a new virus gets released and it takes time for the AV co's to put out a new definition set. Plan obn getting a virus at some point..it's tough to avoid.
