Just joined today - but have been lurking for some time. Great site.

Just about to embark on modding my original xbox so that I can play some classic arcade games from the 80-'s (SNK, Capcom and Sega stuff in particular).

Want to show my daughters what real arcade gaming is like!

Its quite overwhelming with all the info out there.

Dug out the console from the storage (its been in there for well over 6 or 7 years and it booted up fine! Even had Outrun Coast 2 Coast still in the drive!

I have ordered the USB to console adapter.

Original Spinter cell is still in my collection.

Going into the FAQ's now.

But....sorry to be a div but o I need to download the 'softmod' onto the USB first?

What one do I need? I am not interested in upgrading the hardrive (yet!)

Just want to be able to download and play some emulated games.

Thanks all. Looking forward to the adventure!!

Stu

I'm not exactly the welcome commitee or staff here, but welcome! Interested in a softmod eh?

First You need to put the softmod installer save on the USB, then copy it to the HDD with the MS dash after plugging it into the Xbox. Then you use Splinter Cell or whatever gamesave exploit compatible game you have to load the 'save' your softmod is then installed.

After that I strongly suggest using HeXEn Disc 2017 or another TSOP flash capable software to flash your TSOP. Won't work on a final version Xbox board 1.6 released between 2004 and 2005 though, so just leave it soft in that case. Unless you really want something beyond a softmod capability, in which case you can just install a modchip to a 1.6 and eventually change the BIOS on the chip if needed with HeXEn as well.

Not every original copy of every game works though, try yours out and see.

Finally, you may want replace the HDD with a new one just becaue of the age of the drive, an Xbox that is only sotmodded is much harder to replace the HDD than one running an unofficial BIOS off a modchip or the TSOP.

Nice choice of games by the way, now show those kids some gaming!

When it comes to Splinter Cell there is no "special" or "good" version. Despite what you may read elsewhere or hear on Youtube ALL of the Splinter Cell discs work, be it the RED Greatest Hits, the GREY Platinum Hits or the GREEN/BLACK Original . The only games you have to watch out on are Mech Assault, if its says XBOX Live on the disc/case its no good and that is the patched version. For 007 all the originals (far as I know work) and there was a batch of Platinum Hits that got released before they patched that game (theres a certain number on the disc for the working Platinum Hits)

For loading a USB drive you want to use an app called Xplorer360 and you will need to prep the USB first. Plug it into your PC and format it FAT16/FAT32 with an allocation size of 4096. Now plug it into the XBOX and turn on the XBOX. If its a workable USB drive you will see a message along the lines of "The Mem Card Wasnt Working Right And Has Been Erased" You can double check by going to MEMORY and it should list it for whatever port you have it plugged into (1,2,3 or 4) Now you need to plug that USB back into the PC, IGNORE the message that says you need to format the USB to use it. DO NOT FORMAT IT. You can now load up Xplorer360 and copy the save files (drag and drop) to the USB

Thanks fpr the welcome.

Cant wait to get started and learn more.

OK - I have had some success in my first day of modding. After bit of mucking around with memory cards I have installed Unleash X (?) onto the console.

Occasionally it just boots to the normal xbox dash. Then when I restart it'll boot to the new menu. Just a quirk I guess.

Next question is how do I go about adding emulators and ROMS?

The ISO zone seems to be the place to go.

Do I need to use the same memory card that has the spintcer cell saves etc?

Do I need to drop the files into Xplore 360?

Also - the game files on the MAME secion of ISO Zone seem to be quite small. Roughly How many games will bit on the existing (unmodded) harddrive of my xbox?

Thank you in advance.

Use FTP to transfer stuff to the XBOX now that its modded. Hook the XBOX up to your internet, install filezilla on your PC enter the XBOX IP and xbox for username and password then simply drag and drop the stuff to the XBOX

As for MAME you wont fit much on a stock HDD, many MAME ROMs are in the 25-100MB size range and you will only have maybe 3.5-4GB of space.

As for the issue sometimes booting UnleashX and sometimes MSDash what softmod did you use?

Crikey.
That sounds complicated!
Theres me thinking I could stick them on a memory stick!

DO you have any reccomendations to the emulator I should go for?

I was thinking I couldn't get much on there for Mame. Although that might give me 30 odd games.

Maybe I should look at some NEO geo CD stuff instead.

OK. I will need to get some cables. Its all upstairs and the router is downstairs.

I used Softmod Installer Deluxe v5.11.

it seems to be a bit better now. Have tried booking it a few times.

If the mod gives you problems you can use Babylon2 to update it easily.

For arcade theres MameOXtras and Final Burn Legends. Personally I prefer FBL since with MAME almost everytime they update it it means you need a whole new CHD game set which is a real pain in the ass

you can get all the latest emus, homebrew games etc here
http://www.mediafire.com/folder/km5c9do7ti5pu/GREPO

As well as Babylon2 (which also includes ROM sets for major emus) just make sure if you use Babylon2 to grab and install the 6-13 build then run the updates 1 by 1.

Make sure you have a folder on the root of E drive called Emulators and put your emus in there.

Should look like this (except on E drive, I have mine on F cause I got a 250GB HDD)

Hmmmmm
Doesnt want to work.
I am not sure I have downloaded the right files. I went for a neo geo collection. Unzipped them and they are all strange files.
When I drag across the folders they just dont seem to be recognised by the emulator.

On the plus side the FInal Burn now shows on the boot screen under Emulators!! So I will chalk that up as a win!

I will try again later.

If you are unsure when it comes to installing emus and ROMs I would strongly suggest using one of my installers. There is Emu Installer V3 and 3.1 which cover 99% of the major emus and have ROM packs, there was also the Xtras Installers which had slightly newer emus but smaller ROM packs (they were mainly for installing box art and that fancy crap) and there is Babylon2 8-13 which is my last public release.

You can get the Xtras Installers and Babylon via that Mediafire link I posted earlier, and the Emu Installers can be found over at TIZ.

I will try to get an updated Babylon disc image up this weekend with the latest emus and ROM packs.

Hi

I posted a reply earlier and it seems to have vanished!
Thanks for the help.

I have to apologise for my ignorance!

I have downloaded the ROMS from emu paradise. I tried unzipping them and landed up in a right mess!
Nothing worked.

Then I transferred one via filezilla unzipped (green beret) and it opened!

I did fifteen or so, and although they all showed up on the file manager on the xbox some didn't show on the games list on Final Burn (even after a re-boot and rebuild games list)

Par for the course I guess.

I dot know what an installer does precisely. I want sure what else to down load from the link you sent other than FInal Burn.

I am a total novice here.

However, I have managed to get 7 or so games working (Samurai Showdown, Real Bout and Salamander the stand outs!). So I call that progress!

Every day is a school day here.

I fear I will also need a larger hardrive before long!

My installers are just like a PC game. Just click on what you want and which drive you want it installed to and it will do the work.

Also 9 times out of 10 if the rom is zipped just leave it that way and the emu can handle it just fine. If its a rar or 7z you will need to extract it first

It can seem like a big learning curve at first, but really XBOX is super simple. Give it a couple weeks of messing around and you will be an XBOX pro Very Happy

By the by have you backed up your eeprom to your PC yet?
