Hi,

I bought my original xbox back in 2001, and she's still running.
However, the last couple of years i often the 'disk is dirty' message, but the disk is clean. Also, you can hear the xbox reading the disk, and sometimes has trouble reading the data.
I think it would be time to replace the reading lens.

I have never done this before.
Anyone knows what kind of lens i would need to replace?
My xbox was made for the European market back in 2001.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,
Thomas

doesn't matter which market, so you're ok there.
You need to find out which drive you have. Is it Thompson, benq,or Samsung.
Good luck find a lens now though. Ebay is your best bet as most site don't carry parts anymore.

The disc drive type should be on the printed label on the drive casing. With XBMC and UnleashX dashes the disc drive details are also available under Information (I) and System > Settings > System respectively.

Replacing the lens or even the whole laser, where the problem is most likely to be, seems a strange choice. You'd be better off buying a used 'for parts' Xbox and harvesting the whole disc drive from that. Obviously you'd need to check the disc drive was working OK but it would be a far simpler solution.

They're just dashes and if you don't know that I'd assume you're using EvoX. If so you'll need to know how to FTP to the Xbox.

Google either dash and you should find links to downloads for both. XBMC4Xbox is still being worked on, I think the current version is v3.5.3, whilst the last version of UnleashX is 0.39 v584. If you can find v572 instead in some respects it is better but for this case that doesn't matter.

Install them as apps.

Tthat would be easier if you were using either as your main dash because they both have built in file explorers/managers. In fact that's one of their big advantages over EvoX. But they're both far better specified than EvoX in general although that doesn't mean EvoX isn't still useful. It has features that neither XBMC or UnbleashX do.

Most Xbox users would suggest using one of the other as you main dash and install the other, along with EvoX as apps.

Best way of doing this now would be to update the softmod (assuming it isn't chipped) which if it hasn't been touched since 2001 would be something to consider but only once you have the disc drive up and running again.

Thanks alot for the detailed information.
However, i'm afraid i don't quite get it...
I'm just a nembie here:)
All i know is that i't like to replace my xbox lens of the entire disc.
And i don't know where to look what specific replacement i need.

Can we start from here again?Very Happy

Beste regards,
Thomas

I can't really advise on whether replacing just the disc drive laser 'lens' is possible. I've never heard of anyone doing that. Maybe it is but I would ask why do you think it is just the lens that is the issue?

The most common problem is the whole laser itself failing and whilst its power can be 'tweaked' on some makes there simply aren't any tutorials for others. You'll need a reliable multimeter and know exactly where to take the readings from and what the min/max adjustment settings are for that particular disc drive make. These adjustments are VERY small and if you go too far you can burn the laser out completely. This links with some revelant YT tutorials:-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ruecwjHanY

The whole laser module can be replaced but it isn't that simple and again there aren't tutorials for all makes. For these reasons the usual advice when something goes seriously wrong with the Xbox disc drive is to get a complete replacement. Necessarily now that means from a used Xbox and the fact is unless you are certain the disc drive is working on one being sold "for parts" then you'll need to buy a fully functioning Xbox. In which case it would be pointless using that to repair your broken one.

Although this is not 100% true the trouble is that for most purpose you have to use a disc drive from another Xbox. They come in four main makes: Samsung, Thomson, Philips and Hitachi with a few variations depending on the age. They are all fully interchangeable as whole units but AFAIK you can't swap laser modules (or lenses) between different makes.
