So I just got a Raspberry Pi 3b and I figure now is the time to make a backup of my Xbox. How would I go about making an entire disc image copy and moving it to my Pi3's Micro SD via FTP? Would there be an easier way to get at least one backup ASAP?

There may be other ways but FTPing is the only method I can think of if you want to back up your Xbox HD content to external storage like a SD card.

It will depend, obviously, how much there is to copy but it could well take a considerable time.

I recently swapped in a new, bigger HDD to my chipped Xbox. Rather than using Chimp2618 to clone the existing 90+GB of content to the new HDD it was backed up by FTP via a PC to an attached USB 2.0 external HDD.

Once that was done I set up the new HDD on the chipped Xbox using an AID disc and FTPed in all the backed up content. The whole process occupied me for the best part of a day.

Good to know, I'm still running a stock HDD now so I'm handling about 8GB's of content. I'm still looking for a replacement HDD though, hopefully around 700GB's, which drive do you use now?

A 320GB WD Caviar Blue SATA HDD is the biggest I have fitted. Mostly I use 120GB and 160GB IDE Seagates which I've found very reliable.

I had a a bit of a narrow minded prejudice against WD as the one WD 120GB HDD I have was fitted in my most used Xbox. For some reason it was noticeably noisier than any of the Seagates. When I eventually replaced it with the 320GB SATA I was amazed at just how quiet it is.

Unless you have some cheap source the price of the "around 700GB" HDDs you say you're interested in is so close to that of 1TB ones (in fact I've seen them selling for more) it would be good sense to go for 1TB and be done with it.

A Xbox friendly SATA adapter will obviously be needed as well. You'll also need to make sure you format the extended partitions correctly for a HDD of that size.

I'd rather not use a SATA, the best adapters I've seen still drop speed. Even though finding a new 1TB IDE can be pricey and a crapshoot I'd rather test my luck than lose precious power. I'm fairly familiar with partitioning though, so that shan't be much of a hassle.

When you say "drop speed".... What exactly do you refer to?
I'm not asking in an antagonistic manor. More curious. I have used on 3 separate occasions sata drives with adapters to ide on Xbox mods. I have noticed no speed reduction compared to original ide drives. Of course I do expect and notice slower access times compared to normal sata drive to sata hardware IE PC and the like.

I am referring to lengthier reading, writing, and boot times for OS and games. I haven't tried may adapters, but the one's I have I noticed a difference.

I'm not sure how much of a difference it may make, but here is an Ebayauction number of what I generally use. This brand/type has served me well. If it has been previously mentioned or recommended, I apologize in advance.

Or...... I may have an advantage. I do the ram upgrade along with the larger Hdd. I only have 1 set of vergin ram chips left. I'm a Xenium chip guy too. I may go the hard way round, but I always toss my Xenium in, set it all up, then switch to softmod. Most would say waste of time, but I like option of using the chip in case of odd failure..... I think I've had the Xenium Ice in 9 Xbox's now, lol. The only chip I leave in is for my portable I made to X the dvd drive.

Thanks for the lead man, i've never seen his particular one mentioned, but it looks JUST like one I got from Amazon a while ago. The drive I tried it on was not a stellar drive though, so it could have been the same or lower specs as the stock, the stock I had had no spec reading on the label so I dunno. I'll try it again some time in the future with a better drive!

I ended up finding a great deal on an allegedly still factory sealed 320GB IDE Seagate Barracuda and it's on the way to me! I checked in the database on XB-HQ and it's listed as 1.1 compatible, hopefully this thing is new and gets handled well on the shipping. Hopefully all is well and it's only a matter of cloning time before that poor old WD gets it's well deserved retirement!
