hi friends. ive soft modded an xbox original, and im trying to upgrade the hdd using chimp.
i boot using the dvd-rom fine. then i switch the ide cable to the new hdd without issue (its a 2tb sata, seagate, i looked up the serial on the list of acceptable hdds).

the problem is, when i scan all hardware after switching the ide cable to the new hdd, it still reads the dvd-rom as the slave drive (/dev/hdb). does this indicate a specific problem? i can provide more detail if necessary.

side note: im pretty sure nobody has done this incorrectly more times than me. i need all the help i can get.

thanks for any help you can provide!

I really advise you to use the install version of Chimp rather than from disc.

If you're using a v1.6 Xbox you must use the universally compatible Chimp2618 or its most recent update Chimp261812 (Beta).

This earlier thread and my post should help:-

http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/postp178145.html#178145

With a big HDD like a 2TB the extended partitions (F:\ and/or G:\) require formatting using a specific partitioning tool version. Chimp2618 does not include that and one of the reasons for its very recent updating to: Chimp261812, is to address this omission. So that defintely is the one I'd recommend you use.

DAMN IT.
i thought i might have had it completed, so i swapped the IDE cable to the new drive and turned it on. it didn't work. i left it that way until i could put the cable back and try again.
now i'm getting an 05 error on startup (with the IDE cable plugged back into the original drive and DVD ROM). i tried putting the chimp disc i have in the bay to see if it will load it and bypass the error, but it doesn't. is there anything that can be done at this point? did i brick ANOTHER one?

05 error is HDD not locked.

Did you remember to use the Chimp menu option to lock the slave after cloning the original HDD?

Did you also reset the jumper on the slave drive to Master after that?

I didn't remember either of those things, but I think I have to explain more about the situation.

I was able to get the Chimp261812 install that I found to bring up XBlastOS, but everywhere I looked in the interface, I could not find a clone hard drive option. I must have unlocked the master drive somewhere monkeying around the menus.

So that's where I'm at currently. I have the original master drive plugged back in, but I can't get anything loaded. And the replacement drive isn't set up correctly.

So now I need a way to re-lock the original drive. It does have an eeprom backup on it somewhere (took it during the softmod process). A cursory search tells me it's possible to re-lock the original drive, although I'm not sure of any of the details now yet.

Gaaaaaah.

I'll assume you had the Chimp261812 installed correctly ie. with its linuxboot.cfg copied to the root of the E:\drive and also making sure that .cfg text file was actually pointing at the correct location/name for main Chimp261812 folder.

I'll also assume you had both the original HDD and new HDD attached correctly ie. both powered up through the Molex plitter

This is what should have happened after you booted to the UnleashX dash and then swapped the IDE cable from the DVD drive to the new powered up HDD and then launched Chimp:-

You should have got to an XBlastOS screen with menu option icons at the bottom. "FATX" is selected by default and what you should have chosen.

Clicking on that would then have bought up two text lines (the same as those in linuxboot.cfg) near the top of screen with 'OK' against them.

Chimp should then have gone to a Command Line style screen (white text/black background) and after that had finished loading you should see the final line with a flashing cursor against it. Clicking on that should have bought up the main Chimp menus with option (2) being the clone master to slave.

From your description It seems you never got this far and so couldn't have even started the cloning process. What I do not understand is how, if you never loaded the Chimp main menus, you managed to unlock the original ie. Master HDD.

I have to ask these questions just to eliminate the more obvious as the cause of the Error 05 problem:-

1). Are you sure you're now using the original HDD ie. not the SATA 2TB one and have the jumper set correctly (Master or Cable Select)? The jumper shouldn't have been touched on this HDD so will probably be set to Cable Select. You could try shutting down and swapping it to Master. That will not help if the HDD is unlocked but if it is some reporting or IDE cable issue then maybe you'll get lucky.

2). Is the IDE cable is fully re-inserted back into the disc drive? I'd check all the other IDE cable connections too particularly that the plugs are fully inserted and the right way round.

Also check that the power lead/plug to the original HDD is OK and that it is spinning up OK on boot.

If after thoroughly checking all these connection you're still getting Error 05 and you only have the eeprom backup on that original HDD rather than on a PC or other external storage that is a bit of a problem.

It can be fixed but you'd need to have a desktop PC with IDE MB connections to be able to use both an eeprom reader and run XBHDM (Xbox Hard Drive Maker).

I'm going to see if I can get you some advice from another forum (which I can't link you to from here without the mods objecting). The guys who are working on Chimp261812 there, one of whom is the original Chimp creator, might be able to offer some more help.

An Xbox guru, Rocky5, on another forum pointed out to me what you must have done. He is one of the guys involved in the development of Chimp261812.

You booted Chimp OK and got to the Start page but rather than use the FATX option to boot the cloning menus you went into Settings > HDD Settings and must have accidentally unlocked the master drive whilst you were there.

The solution suggested is if the eeprom is still on the unlocked HDD you should be able to use a PC with an USB IDE external HDD enclosure. Then launch a small program called Xplorer360 which, unlike Windows, will display the content of any FATX formated drives attached.

Find the eeprom in E:\Backup and copy it to the PC.

Now it gets a little more complicated. With the eeprom.bin available you should be able to either lock the original HDD via another Xbox or, if your desktop PC allows you to be able to use XBHDM, actually build and lock the the new HDD from scratch.

There is a USB version of XBHDM which may mean you'd be able to use that to lock the original HDD directly.

Problem is that I haven't use any of these tools myself. You need specialist practical advice I don't have. I can't tell you where to find that but if you re-read this post and Google a bit you might get lucky. Smile

before i say anything else, thank you so much for being so helpful! i really appreciate all the research and detailed instructions and time you've put into this to help me. for real.

that said, i'm incredibly frustrated. i just spent another four hours "feeling" like i was close to progress and not getting any tangible results.

i happen to have a computer with an IDE interface in the motherboard (one of the handful of times my holding onto old stuff has come in handy). i took the original xbox drive out and plugged it into the computer motherboard, and after several failed configurations with the IDE cables and other devices, finally got windows to recognize the drive and copied the contents (including the eeprom) to the old computer's hard drive. so, i've got that now.

next, i downloaded xboxhdm and made the bootdisk as the program how-to doc instructed. i'm able to boot to linux in lock/unlock mode and run the "lockhd -a" command. i copied the eeprom backup to a floppy disk (seriously) and i can point xboxhdm to the eeprom there, and it recognizes it. but NOW i'm stuck because the hard drive i'm trying to lock (which is the original drive from the xbox) shows as "frozen" and it can't lock a frozen drive. the error said to "try and disable 'automatic detection' of the ide drive" in the BIOS. i checked in the BIOS and i don't see any "automatic detection". i can only disable the drive completely so it's unusable, which i suppose i can try, but i don't think it will help.

i've tried about a billion master/slave combinations with the CD ROM drive and the hard drive (both are on the same IDE cable) but only setting them both to cable select has worked at all. any deviation from that, and neither shows up as a device anywhere (BIOS doesn't even recognize it).

i feel like i've painstakingly followed every single brush stroke in a tutorial on painting a majestic sunset with mountains and trees and ended up with a crayon drawing of an amoeba named Bert picking his nose.

i'm also really tired.

Several more unsuccessful attempts.

- I read about hot swapping drives to get around the frozen issue, but when I finally got that to work, the prompt just stopped. It brought up the next input line, but didn't fix the drive (I plugged it back into the Xbox to check)
- I found xboxhdm2.2 and made a USB bootable stick with it (which was also a pain in the ass) but none of those options work either. I get errors in FreeDOS, and the slax OS works, but there's no Xbox recovery option in it.

Short of using another Xbox, I've tried everything.

Does anyone have a sure fire way to relock a drive? Has anyone here done it? would it be possible to send me the tool you used? I've hit wall after wall after wall and I don't know what to do.

I gently tried to nudge you in the right direction for this sort of help and I can do no more or the moderators here will not like it.

So don't give up, there are still people out there on at least one other very active Xbox forum with knowledge I simply don't have concerning the ins and outs of using XBHDM.

It sounds like you've tried every program out there to attempt to re-lock your hard drive. I haven't been active in the scene for 4+ years so I'm not up on any current developments, but it looks like you've already tried many recent versions of the old staple programs.

You may just want to cut your losses at this point and buy a chip for the box. I have no idea if anyone still legitimately sells Xbox modchips, but a quick Google search led me to this: https://www.mod-chip.com/en/xbox/xbox/175/aladdin-xt-modchip-compatible-with-xbox?c=49. I actually used to buy my chips off that site back in 2007/2008, and while I'm surprised they still exist, i have no idea of their legitimacy these days.

Install that (or any modchip), flash an X2 bios on it and boot up AID. You'll be up and running in no time if you can find a place that still sells the chips.

Thanks everyone! I was finally able to rebuild the original drive from scratch using the software tools. It's back in the Xbox and booting to unleashx. Phew.

At this point, I want to tread very carefully and make sure I get all the details right. I do realize some instructions are vague or disconnected on purpose, and I'm going to try not to tread on that territory, but tell me if I do.

Right now, I want to get the linuxboot.cfg to "point to the right location" correctly. When i FTP in, I see the correct location, but I'm not sure how exactly to put it in the linuxboot.cfg file.

Should i type
Code:
/E/Apps/chimp
or
Code:
E:/Apps/chimp
or something else?

Neither.

If the linuxboot.cfg is on the root of the E:\drive where it should be you don't need to specify the drive.

"chimp" should be in E:\Apps (single level folder) so the linuxboot.cfg in this case should read:-

kernel /Apps/chimp/linux265
initrd /Apps/chimp/initrd.gz
................................................etc

However some softmods don't create an "Apps" folder they use the full term "Applications" in which case it would be:-

kernel /Applications/chimp/linux265
initrd /Applications/chimp/initrd.gz
................................................etc

In either case if the "chimp" folder being used has been renamed to "chimp2618" or whatever then, in the first case it would be:-

kernel /Apps/chimp2618/linux265
initrd /Apps/chimp2618/initrd.gz
................................................etc

Letter case is ignored by UnleashX but best practice is to use the folder name exactly as shown. However you could also just as easily change the Chimp folder name to match the linuxboot.cfg - its really up to you. Just ensure that the location folder name and Chimp folder name matches those used in linuxboot.cfg, thats the important thing.

It is all very simple really. If there is anything wrong with the .cfg when you click on the FATX option (or with older versions leave it to automatically start) all that will happen is rather than get a green "OK" for both items at the top of the start page it'll flag up red and Chimp cloning menus won't launch.

If it is correct it'll switch to a command line type page with a penguin icon and lots of stuff we don't need to worry about. After around 20 secs you should get the option to press enter to start, alongside a flashing cursor. Click (A) and up should come the main Chimp HDD cloning menus.

Well, I'm almost there. The FATX option pops up normally this time, and chimp saw both hard drives. I ran the cloning tool and it seemed to go pretty fast. Now I'm struggling with locking the new drive. When I try to do that, it shows an "invalid option" error in blue. It is still set to slave at this point. Should I switch back to master before trying to lock the drive? Does this error have a common cause?
