Post subject: Problems with UnleashX file explorer

I have a softmodded (through mechwarr softmod) running UnleashX V0.38. When I try to use a CD-R to transfer ROMs to the box, the File Explorer (I assume this is supposed to act as the built in file manager) never shows any data in the D: drive (correct disc input drive???). I am already running emulators for several platforms and just need to begin uploading ROM games. Any help appreciated

Murtagh

Depending on what kind of drive you have, it may or may not agree with CD-R media. Try burning to a cd-rw. Ideally you'd like to just FTP into the xbox from the pc, because that will save you a lot of trouble down the road. Also on my xbox, cd-rw media works fine as long as its only been written to once. For whatever reason if I add on to it, it will only read the newer part of the disc. So give that a try.

If your putting the roms on the disk in data format it wont show, try using qwix 101 to pack the roms in to an X-ISO and they should show up for you.

If it keeps locking up during transfer check the rom title for illegal characters and for name length.

Thanks for the help guys...

I tried Qwix, I may not understand whats wrong but I can't get it to work. I found that I can use a DVD-R to add games and they will show up, when copying games I'm getting two main error messages, error codes 5 and 123, in UnleashX what do these mean?

as always help much appreciated

Do you get the error when it hits a ROM with a real long name or one with lots of strange characters?

I might be wrong, but I think I remember having error 123 a lot transferring roms (I did over 4000 of em), and i think it had something to do with the filenames having illegal characters in them or being too long. I think commas in the filenames were a part of it, but i'm not sure anymore.

I have noticed that commas do not work, and there is a character limit, but there are still files that don't work for no reason I can find.

The error codes I get back are Error Code 5 and Error Code 123, some do not have a reason as to why the copy failed in the text message after.

ex Addams Family Values (U).smc will not copy, short, no commas, no illegal characters... no idea

I know this is such a long time later but I hope anyone else that has the same issue may find my post. I encountered the same issues and here is what I have found.

MOST Special characters do not work.
Long files names do not work (I think it is 30 or so)
IF THE FILE IS A ZIPPED FILE THE FILE NAME INSIDE IT MAY CONTAIN ILLEGAL CHARACTERS OR TOO MANY!!
Sometimes the zip files have bad information and need to be unzipped and re-zipped with a different program.

Here's what to do to make sure he file will copy

Unzip the file (if it is a .zip)
Change the name so there are no special characters (letters, numbers, and spaces only)
Use 7zip to compress the file (right click > add to archive > change the archive format to zip (leave everything else) > click ok)

From here you should be able to burn it to a cd or FTP it.

Good luck!

I know this is an old thread but worth mentioning for anyone looking for advice on similar matters:-

DVD-R is considered the only universal media for use with the Xbox. Some disc drives do support CD-R and I've read other users have had success with DVD+R. But it depends on the drive and, in my experience, to a lesser extent on the media make.

Creating data discs ie. readable on a PC as well as a Xbox produces some VERY odd problems.

The UnleashX dash/file explorer does not like any disc other than those in the UDF burning format. But, absolutely vital, this must be with the Unicode support turned off. The only free burning program I know that even has this option is Imgburn.

My preliminaty tests show that if the data contains a file larger than 4GiB it will not display that file or anything else that was listed below it. If the data includes folders with files larger than 1GiB the folder will display but the content will not. There are even variations between UnleashX dash versions eg. the 0.37 v543 will display data disc content that the later 0.39 UnleashX dashes v572 and v584 won't.

None will display .png. jpegs and the other image file formats or text files I've tested from disc. But copy them to the HDD and there's no problem.

The XBMC dash/file manager behaves differently. It doesn't like UDF with Unicode support on either but is quite happy with almost any other burn format ie. ISO9660 (all versions) and the various bridge formats like UDF+ISO9660. Many other little differnces too.

In short if you want a Xbox readble disc you're best off using a specifically designed program like Qwix to do it. But these discs wil not be readble on a PC at least not without other software.

Most of the error codes when copying data from disc the early posters here mentioned are indeed, as the poster above and others earlier suggested, to do with Xbox incompatible characters, file name lengths and even number of container folders. I think Error 123 is a file that exceeds the character limit and Error 183 maybe one that contains an Xbox 'illegal' character. Don't quote me on either of those though.

The UnleashX file explorer can't handle any of this and will give you those error messages when trying to copy such files. But switch to the XBMC file manager and that appears to be able to patch many of these problems as it copies them to the HDD.
