Hi
I soft modded my xbox way back around 2005 or so. I don't even remember the year. I don't remember what softmod I used but it involved hacking with 007 Agent Under Fire. But now that there is SID 5.12 I want to upgrade the xbox to the newer softmod (is this necessary or should I leave it alone?) and I am not sure how I go about reinstalling a mod...do I have to restore Xbox to factory setting? I don't have the eprom anymore.
can someone give me a basic idea on what needs to be done to update the softmod?

Hi thanks for posting,
I had an issue similar to yours. Let me drag up an old post when I asked the same question. That way I can double check my solution to make sure its valid.

Cool
thanks for helping. This is a confusing and frustrating due to lack of information out there regarding this.
I am assuming you were able to successfully reinstall the softmod in the end?

Yeah the softmod dev SPPV had me use one of his installer disks to remove a softmod or something before I had an old computer to build an xbox hard drive iso image from scratch.
Here's what I'd like to propose:
1.) If your softmodded console is still working, back up your EEPROM (this is very important!) If your console's softmod ever gets corrupted for some reason the EEPROM.bin file can save you.
2.) You can use one of SPPV's xbox hard drive creation programs to rebuild your console's softmodded hard drive's contents using the EEPROM file.
We can discuss further once you have your EEPROM file backup to your computer.

Softmoded consoles makes it easier to upgrade the softmod,
Backup any emu's, games, app's just in case you loose it or it over writes.
Your console will boot any self boot installer disc's, no more game exploit needed.
If you are upgrading the HDD that is just a little bit more difficult but not impossible.

Good add in Kent. I figured we mention all that once he's confirms backing up his EEPROM. Don't want to have something go wrong along the way and for him not to have it!

The way I went about updating mine was pretty simple. I did mine with SID 5.12 ad I simply do the following:
1 BACKUP EEPRROM. Make SURE you do this!
2. Backup the "Backup" folder on E:\
3. Download the SID 5.12 save exploit and copy it over to your save games by way of FTP. This is simple. all you need to do is go to E:\UDATA\21585554 and replace everything in the "00000000" folder with whats in the SID exploit Zip file. As in copy over the contents in your FTP client. It will ask you to overwrite, and you want to answer yes to all files. This will leave your backup folder in place and will simply "update" all the files in the SID installer.
4. Make sure you have your gamesave exploit still on the drive (i.e. SplinterCell/Mech/007)
5. Reboot your xbox with No disc in and let your dash launch. At this point you will want to MAKE SURE your Game Disc will boot up. You will need it to work to continue.
6. In UnleashX go to System>Boot Softmod Menu
7. Once loaded SID 5.12 should be up and then you will want to select "Remove Softmod" THis will remove the softmod and will keep all your files intact and reboot back to stock
8. Once rebooted, simply pop in your game, load the exploit and re-Softmod your Xbox and Enjoy!
Imo this is the cleanest and safest way to update. Failing to remove an old softmod first can cause issues for some. Mind you this is the ONLY method I use and it has ALWAYS worked 100% Once the softmod is back on your box, it should boot right back to the way it was before you updated. At that point you can update your Apps/Emus etc. _________________ XBox v1.0

Great info, sephiroth878. Truly appreciate it!!!
Just 1 question, by Game Disc, you mean the disc I use to exploit Xbox for install softmod (for example, 007 Agent Under Fire, which I used originally).
I am getting another copy of Agent Under Fire coming in a week or two. If that's all I need and the save file, then I should be good. I checked my memory card, it is still got the save on it...expecting that the Xbox has it too but I will check later. I will copy the eeprom out from it too.

Hi nycxtile,
Are you using your console's stock 8-10GB hard drive or an upgraded one?
Just make sure you have your EEPROM.bin file backed up on your console and a PC before proceeding with updating your softmod. In case something weird happens, you can always build up an xbox OS and hard drive partitions with the EEPROM file.
